The character will be carried over as much as Saint's Row 2 was. Shepard will die or fall in battle, and get revived in some Bacta Tank, complete with a new face of your choosing.

After the obscene amount of lies Mass Effect had, I have zero faith that anything they said regarding the sequel will happen.

I'm thinking it will probably be like Kotor 2 where at the beginning of your game you'll run into a character or NPC to discuss the events of the first game and the choices you make in your dialog will fill in the gaps.

NPC: "Wow, that Shepard sure was a sexy woman!"

You: >Yes
       >Shepard was a man dumbshit

NPC: "Oh yeah, he was a man. Well, didn't you think it was totally hot when he fucked that alien?"

You: >Yes
       >I wanted him to fuck the girl, but he fucked the alien instead.  :(
       >I somehow miraculously got him to fuck the woman, so you are wrong about him fucking the alien.

Later, as you are facing the main bad guy...

Main bad guy: "I'm going to fuck you up like when Shepard used her vagina his penis to have sex with the woman the man the alien!"

They specifically said they weren't doing this.  And a bunch of BioWare devs on their forum are telling everyone to keep their saves and stuff – why would they say this (and in the recent doc, and in interviews, etc) if they weren't going to do so?  Especially since the game is only a year from release.

Speaking of release, I wonder when it's coming out.  Going from EA's financial reports and their weird calendar it should come out in early 2010... but why would they be showing the game a full year ahead of time and miss the holiday season?  EA's also going through rough times, and I would think they would want one of their biggest games to be available during the holidays.

Oh shaddup.  I've never been a console or franchise fanboy.

Yeah, I'd buy it for fifteen dollars.  The main planet quests are ace and the art design is pretty awesome, but as a RPG - it's very limited.  There are also tons of side quests that are awful featuring barren planets that you ride around in your galactic dune buggy.  The story is pretty cool, though.

And Wrex is awesome. :rock

Minus five points for Seth Green voicing some handicapped pilot, though.

I never liked Jay Leno, I just love to troll.

I will watch about any horror film, however - doesn't mean I qualify them as artistic masterpieces, just guilty pleasures to keep me entertained.

Mass Effect is worth about $20.  If I had to pay more than that, I'd be disappointed, considering you can run through the main quest pretty quickly and there isn't a ton of stuff to explore (or worth exploring, anyway).  It rubbed me the wrong way after a save mishap, but after revisiting it sometime later, I've become something of a fan.

It's no Fallout, though.

Mass Effect is worth it for 15 bucks. It's not a bad game. It's just a well made but extremely flawed rpg. Still, it has a lot of good ideas going for it, and high replay value I think. Just don't expect Fallout 3 caliber and you should be fine. I think it's worth experiencing once if only for the fact you can punch a news reporter in the face if she asks too many questions.

What happened to BioWare?  Each of their games has gotten progressively worse.  KOTOR was pretty ace at the time although it has aged not so well, Jade Empire was fun yet deeply flawed, and I'm hearing that Mass Effect is, at best, worth $20.  smh, BioWare.  smh.

Hey now, let's not say things we can't take back.  Mass Effect is a lot better than Jade Empire - but it also retailed for $60 and was saddled with Molyneux-esque broken promises (you can do this and this and this, but... not really).

I agree that as a developer, BioWare has yet to meet the bar they set with Knights of the Old Republic, but they did create a fantastic universe and group of characters with Mass Effect.  As an original IP, it's far more interesting than any Lucas fan fiction and there is a great deal of potential with the story they crafted.  The key is to pair it up with sound level design (no more fucking elevators!), interesting quests, more options, etc.

The framework is there and I'm hoping they hit this one out of the ballpark.

There's no way Mass Effect is better than Knights of the Old Republic.  KOTOR was a deeply flawed game, but was unparalleled in its storytelling and gameplay at the time (on the console side of things, so don't scold me, Frag!).  Its shortcomings were forgiven because of what it brought to the table.

Mass Effect has an awful command system, poor tactical management, some truly horrendous quests, tons of bugs, etc.  It has all the rough edges that KOTOR had back in its heyday and then some.  "Polish" is apparently a word that is alien to the staff at BioWare.

Jad9.9mpire is probably the worst Bioware game out there. It was really underwhelming. A 6.0 game at best.

Maas Effect on the other hand is pretty good. Also a bit flawed. But the good outnumbers the bad IMO.

I thought KOTOR's battle system sucked ass. I actually got enjoyment out of ME's. KOTOR is a complete step back from BG2, especially in regards to customization and classes. ME actually has an interesting class system and GREAT - although still not on par with BG2 - customization. ME is the better game, shit sidequests and all.

On top of this, Kotor is ugly as fuck. ME is really nice to look at.

I like KOTOR, but I would never replay it. I actually had incentive to replay ME. Can you make a space lesbo in KOTOR?! NOPE.

To be fair, a lot of my enjoyment (and I gather a good majority of others, as well) stemmed from the fact that I was not totally fucking insulted by the storytelling - especially given the property.  The prequels had pretty much damaged any interest I had in Star Wars, so my very, very low expectations were blown away.

My favorite game stories don't even feature what you just described. If it's anything Japanese it's probably Silent Hill related. I prefer western game stories to Japanese ones and I still think KOTOR's story wasn't all that great.

Although I must admit I'm tempted to replay it so I can kill off Carth.

I haven't played KOTOR2 yet. I've been meaning to, but from what I've heard Obsidian 1up'd Bioware.

It was a buggy mess that wasn't as much fun as the first.  You'd find shit like hints at the beginning of a sidequest (the AK factory thing I mentioned) that were dropped from the final game to get it out on time.  There were cooler force powers, tho.

Ugh.  I don't know if I can handle Andrews pissing on another Mass Effect for another year.

Wilco, I'm not saying it was flawless.  I just really enjoyed the story and presentation.  I love sci-fi like Evilbore likes its jappy fantasy.  I loved all the shit in the codex.  Most games try and hide all plot Lost-style in an attempt to make their shitty story seem mysterious.  I think it's obvious they'll at least fix the loading and inventory issues, but won't believe anything they say about combat and DLC until I see it.

I still think something happened at the end of that game's development as Bioware got bought.  There was a talk of a Gears level marketing spend by MS, and that and all the DLC never materialized.

I also saved Wrex b/c I always pump my speech skills to get bitches to do what I want.

Is the battle system better at least? The thing that kept me playing kotor was sense of obligation and the characters. As much as I think the narrative is pedestrian, since it's typical EVIL VS LIGHT star wars bullcrap, the characters and characterization was excellent. Except Carth. Carth sucks. Kaidan sucks too btw.

It's really hard for me to get into an rpg if I don't like the battle system. I really didn't get any satisfication from KOTOR's battle system.

Does Obsidian try efforts to make the star wars universe not so black and white in the sequel? Because that The Force stuff is gay.

Yeah, the biggest compliment I can give BioWare is that the universe is totally fleshed out.  I mean, it feels like they have species in the game that they could've made an entire game about, but in actuality, are just supporting characters or window dressing.  The atmosphere is pretty fantastic.

The only thing off the top of my head that I remember different is that one game had a landspeeder time trial game in it.  I don't remember if that was KOTOR2 or the first.  Other than that, they really are very similar.

I played Jade Empire. I sorta kinda liked it and then it just rushed to the end. Disappointing. The final boss battle was so shitty. I used the style thousand cuts or whatever, over and over. He couldn't touch me.

I think the main reason I liked JE was the fact that I turned Silk Fox into a ninja lesbo. That was ballin'.

Shame the battle systems are the same too. KOTOR's battle is so boring. =/ But at least it's better than FFXII!

Agreed.  Mass Effect has a pretty awesome universe Bioware made.  I'd also say that going to every planet and having them all be the same, all with same buildings and all, just breaks the illusion of things.  One of the great things about Fallout 3 is that as much as they focused on combat, you could level up a lot by doing exploratory things.  Mass Effect 2 should really not make everything about combat, try to let you explore more alien areas, and not make 99% of the interesting stuff contained within the story.

If you do end up buying it, don't waste time exploring the optional planets. I say this as someone who did all the Kotor sidequests and loved every moment of it. I would say that the amount of game left over is easily worth $15.
