Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (OFFICIAL THREAD)
« on: December 04, 2006, 01:56:54 PM »

On December 5th the second Castlevania for DS shall be in US stores, and if the reviews are any indication, it will not disappoint!

Heres the plot that I shamelessly ripped from wikipedia:
Quote
Portrait of Ruin gives the player control of two different characters; vampire hunter Jonathan Morris and a young witch named Charlotte Aulin. Jonathan and Charlotte were childhood friends, both descended from legendary clans devoted to the protection of humankind against the forces of evil. Jonathan Morris is the son of Castlevania: Bloodlines' hero, John Morris, and thusly the grandson of Quincey Morris from Bram Stoker's Dracula. Though since the events taken place of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night in 1797, the Morrises have inherited the legendary "Vampire Killer" whip from the Belmont family, their lineage is not of direct Belmont blood, and so they are unable to use the power of the whip conventionally. The last of the Belmonts to have possessed the "Vampire Killer" before it was relinquished to the Morris clan was Richter Belmont. Charlotte Aulin, the second main playable character, is descended distantly from the Belnades clan, a bloodline known for their magical powers.

Taking place during the pinnacle of World War II in Europe in the year 1944, the two heroes must work together to foil a plot devised by the vampire artist Brauner, and his two daughters, Stella and Loretta. The malevolent powers invoked by the chaos and devastation on the part of the world and humankind convene to summon Dracula's castle once more from the abyss. Brauner's objective is to resurrect Dracula using the power of magical portraits to draw power from the castle itself.[4] Stella and Loretta share his conviction by the will of the souls of the innumerable soldiers killed in battle during the war, though he prefers that they not get involved.[5]

REJOICE!

Also stolen:

Like the "Julius mode" from Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, gamers will be able to switch freely between Jonathan and Charlotte to best utilize their abilities in the battle against the vampires' army. They will also be able to combine their powers to use combo attacks. Also, their combined abilities will be needed in certain parts of the castle for them to bypass some of the areas.

Jonathan and Charlotte will be able to explore environments such as Egyptian deserts and misty towns via paintings which Brauner has dispersed throughout the castle. During the adventure, the heroes will encounter 155 different enemies. As they progress, the duo will learn new skills and acquire equipment and items. Some of Charlotte's magical skills could possibly be controlled by the stylus, as indicated by her lightning technique.

Portrait of Ruin will support the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection with a limited cooperative play mode. There will also be a versus mode, but it is still unknown if it will be Wi-Fi or local wireless. The Wi-Fi co-op mode is limited to one boss-run challenge, but the co-op mode offers two further such scenarios. There will also be an online shop mode enabled in Wi-Fi. After connecting, players will be able to "bid" their rare items. Whenever a player purchases the item, the selling player inherits all money, but doesn't lose the item. This will be the second multiplayer Castlevania game; Dawn of Sorrow, also for the DS, had a very simple multiplayer mode. The difference between the multiplayer in the two games is that Portrait of Ruin will be the first with co-op multiplayer in the Castlevania franchise.

In short, this game kicks all kinds of ass.  You guys are going to love it.   :D

Castlevania PoR is pretty cool. At first it was same old, same old and was pretty damn dull. I was just waltzing through the enviroments like no one's business, and then I died. Surprisingly the game is balanced in difficulty.

And then, as I progressed it starts to get better, with new features getting unlocked one by one. Since I was on media black out for the game, I didn't know how it'd all work. All I knew is that there was an extra character, but I didn't know anything about how it'd work. It handles beautifully. You solve puzzles and crap, and it surprisingly brings a lot of new stuff to a tired and old formula.

You can summon another character out and aid you in fights. This is really cool because it doubles your arsenal. You have special abilities, your partner has special abilities, you can learn specialized combo attacks even, you use eachother to solve puzzles... it works really well. Another thing is that it makes the game a lot easier and you can take out moderately strong enemies out with a few hits. What really brings the game's charm out is fighitng solo. Balancing between fighting solo and playing with your partner is a lot of fun.

Oh, and portraits add another new kick to the standard formula. Nice game. I've played about 30 minutes so far, so we'll see how it goes from there but it's Castlevania, and as we know Castlevania kicks ass.

So far it's definitely more pleasant than the mind numbingly disappointing Dawn of Sorrow, which was basiaclly Aria of Sorrow 1.5. One thing I hated about that game was the enviroments. You had cars in the castle, and stuff and it didn't feel unified or even feel like it was a CV enviroment. PoR changes this for the better.

Can't comment on the music so far unfortunately, but the portraits and art are awful. I really hope they get this anime shit out of Castlevania, because it's terrible. They even have those anime like faces when someone says something silly. Like >: (. I don't want that in CV, honestly. It feels out of place.

This game is mind numbingly good.  Yes, it's all the things that Craig Harris and PARRISH knocked off points for.  It is more action and platform oriented.  It is more linear.  And it does tone back the RPG elements.

And you know what?  It's a much better game because of it.  It rocks.

I can't wait to test co-op too.

I think Parrish hates it because I noticed that the difficulty also seems legitimately higher.  I think I actually had to use an item to replenish health within my first 30 minutes or so, whereas I don't even think I bought potions for Dawn of Sorrow.

OH ITS ON LIKE DONKEY KONG!

*punches Willco*

Yeah the game is 'harder' than the previous two titles where the challenge was collecting souls n what not. Now that normal enemies are tougher its harder to just grind levels real easy and decimate the boss.

Also, Parish hates challenging games lol.

I can sort of sympathize with Parrish about game difficulty levels.  I only have a certain amount of time during the day to play games, and I don't want to spend it replaying the same section over and over because I have to:

hop over a dozen pin-sized platforms or die by falling into some pit

backtrack the entire level because I forgot some item or keycard or whatthefuckever

kill an entirely unnecessary amount of superpowered enemies in a particular order

fight with the fucking aiming controls or camera (hello, resident evil games)

solve some mathematic puzzle even Rain Man couldn't solve without a strategy guide

have the exact combination of potions/spells/weapons to beat godlike swarming grunt enemies (hello, 90% of rpgs)

etc.

I play for fun, and to me frustration isn't fun, so I usually play my games on the normal or easy setting (depending on the game) so I can finish the game and see the ending.  When games are too difficult I rarely ever finish them, and to me that's a waste of money.

I was actually able to get a random 4-player game last night. I was so happy. I was at 6900-something, and the other guys were around 6800, 5000, and 4500. After a hard fought match, I won the first one. I was deciding whether I really wanted to play again, but because it's usually pretty hard for me to get a 4-player game, I figured I didn't want to be a dick and try to keep my high ranking but jumping out.

I then proceeded to get completely fucked, as only 30 seconds in, my screen jumped up like 3/4 of the way and I got last. My ranking went down like 300 points. FUCK.

So I played some PoR and everything was good again. The dual-character system is pretty awesome, but the calling-out of the names gets a bit annoying.

You might want to try making a topic that says "Metal Gead Solid Portal Ops thread" or something like that.  "The day is upon us" doesn't guarantee many people looking at it.  :)

I can't wait for MPO, but I won't get that until sometime next week.  There does seem to be a lack of excitement for it, but that's probably because it's on a portable system this time.  It's really too bad.

Yusssssss my copy came yesterday.

Im about a couple of hours in, and it seems I will agree with Lyte Edge that this is the best portable Castlevania ever. Im loving the difficulty level, this game is actually quite challenging, some of the backgrounds are beautiful and detailed, and it seems to have the best CV soundtrack since SOTN. My only complaint with the game is the blandest anime characters I have ever seen, but thats nothing.

Hay guyz,

I haven't played any of the newer Castlevania games since the first GBA game.  In regards to the two DS games, which is better for someone who just wants to get back into the franchise?

I'm also not a fan of super long games, that artifically lengthen things.  I also was turned off at the thought of the touch screen implementation in the first game, thats why kept me away.  So, I heard this new game has none of that nonsense, will I like it?
