it's actually a pretty dang polished rpg for a german effort. it plays more like a threedee baldur's gate than any recent bioware offering, and while the story is inoffensive western fantasy pap, the art is great and the game runs smooth. there's a lot of classes and skills, and the party system seems to work well so far. if you aren't playing this i hope you gets aids and also that blood comes out of your peepee's hole.

I'd like to play it but I can't find it in stock yet locally. I'll stop by EB or something on my way home from Saturday morning errands, maybe it is in and they just haven't updated their website.

gamestop had it in friday here. maf got it too, and he doesn't hate it (which is rare for the european pc games i talk him into buying) which is also a good sign!

Plays like a 3d Baldur's Gate you say? Hmm... There's a demo out so I'll check it out and see how well it runs. I could really use a more modern BG style game since BioWare doesn't make them like they used to.

it plays more like baldur's gate than nwn or nwn2 ever did. lots of dialogue options, too, and the underpinning "das schwarz auge" (it's some dirty german pnp system) engine translates a BIT better into a computer game than dnd does, especially in combat. i really like it so far, painfuly predictable story and characters notwithstanding.

and what's the deal with Europe and wide screen support in games? every Euro-made demo I've played recently has been lacking it

I don't think it's all that overrated, especially given how the PC RPG market has been over the past few years. However, it does have fairly simplistic combat and the fact that you can only upgrade combat-related stats is a bit dissapointing, but the characters, story, the variety of quests, and the overall grimy and dirty nature of the world puts it up there with the best PC RPGs from this decade.

Anyway, I finally made it to where the demo ended in Drakensang and am looking forward to getting out into the world.

Have you made it into Vizima yet? That's where I really thought the quests and story started to pick up.

That's not too surprising then. Fanatical forum posters have a tendency to latch onto certain games and hype them as the greatest thing ever.

I never really read that much about The Witcher until jumping into it a few months ago and I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was.

Oh, this is based on Das Schwarze Auge? I remember that the Realms of Arkania series was based on that, too, though I never played them.

bit the bullet last night and picked it up off gamers gate. fuck you steam

good news is that it seems to run better than the demo. bad news is that i can only get more than 15-20fps if I play on low settings with low shadows and everything else turned off

even if i change from 1650x1080 to 1280x720 or even 854x480 i still get really shitty performance with medium settings. the performance i get on full settings (high and all lighting) too is very similar to medium, probably about 5pfs lower. but as soon as I put it to low settings i get a massive jump in frame rate, between 40-50fps.

it doesn't look bad at all on low settings but its just disappointing after seeing how sexy it looks on higher settings. everything just seems so empty without the medium detail.

I'm playing on an Asus G1 laptop - C2D @ 2.0ghz, 3.something GB of RAM (lousy 32bit Vista), 512mb GeForce 7700 Go. I don't expect to have anywhere near full detail but I figured I could get medium settings on a lower resolution which doesn't seem to be the case.

The quest where you have to go down in the sewers and fight all the rats is horrible. I'll just come along a random group and they'll just swarm my party and kill everyone; this has happened several times and many other times I've only had one person left alive having to take down two or three rats by themselves. But I fought through all that. Now I get to this stupid rat boss that has like a million health and RANDOMLY SUMMONS MORE RATS TO FIGHT YOU. UUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

That's what I'm going to do. I went back to a slightly older save game and left the sewers to do other stuff. The rat queen was eating my party for lunch. :'(
