Evilbore hivemind: halp me encode videos! iPod!
« on: February 24, 2009, 03:27:57 PM »
I bought an iPod Classic.

I was told to use Handbrake for PC to rip and encode DVDs, but it fails to properly rip most of my DVDs.  So I'm using DVDFab to rip, Handbrake to encode.  However, the video looks totally washed out.  Now, I can change the A/V settings in QuickTime Pro, but I'm not sure how to export those A/V settings and that seems like I'm using too many programs to do what I need.

Bottom line: Trying to make good looking video for portable usage and viewable on SDTVs when I want to.

I use DVDFab to rip using the "Main Movie" option. Then I take it into Handbreak and set the "Ipod Legacy" preset, and compress away.

I've done over 30 movies this way and none come washed out, and it still maintains roughly the same resolution of a standard DVD.

Are you using the old build or the more recent one?  A quick Google search shows I'm not the only one with such a problem.

I'm only semi-nerd.

ManaByte, what other presets do you use with iPod Legacy?

I just, yesterday, updated to 0.9.3 Handbrake and just use the default presets.

Here are screens of three of the more recent ones I've done (I have ROTK EE pt2 compressing right now):

I've never had any color problems.

The ONLY problem I have is with subtitles when Handbrake crops a non-anamophic DVD. I tried doing the non-SE Star Wars trilogy, but the subtitles won't show up when Handbrake crops the picture. Need to figure that one out.

But like I've said; I've done about 32 rips/compressions using the DVDFab/Handbrake combo.

Edit: Also I am outputting them to .M4V

But you're doing two-pass and such?  That's what I meant.

Nope. The default preset doesn't do two-pass.

Also, do you use the fit picture preset on your iPod or watch a teeny tiny pic?

I tweaked it a bit and it seemed to work.  My iPod is about to become a Battlestar Galactica, Venture Bros., It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia machine!

Well 120 gigs fits a lot. 54gigs of video on mine so far. Still need to rip Alien/Aliens, Predator, a couple Rockys, and a couple of the Star Treks.

My Zune died and I wanted a video device.  I picked it up for $219 at RadioShack.  Figured that was a good deal.  I only have like 10GB of music anyway.  I'd imagine Battlestar Galactica will take up the most.  I don't know if I'm too keen on putting films on it.  Maybe I'll rip a flick if I'm traveling, but television shows are better for airplane travel, sea travel, etc.

Doesn't DVDFab have to option to go straight to iPod format? Mine does.

Neither do I. Shit, just google DVDFab 5.2.3.2 rapidshare and you'll have a working copy in 10 minutes.
