Starbucks sizes
« on: February 25, 2009, 03:57:17 AM »
Were they invented just to fuck with people?

For once, I'm not being a prick, and I look at the sign, and actually order a "tall".
After much confusion the even more foreign (compared to me) "baristas" ask me if I want small or large.
What happened to the third size? Argh!

why drink at starbucks?  easier, cheaper, and tastier ways of getting coffee or even just caffeine.

The thing is that they damn well know what size you want.  They just want to be obnoxious.

If I drink local, I support the British economy, if I drink Starbucks, I support the American economy (and a bit of British as well).

What is to be preferred?

But I think the only local alternative is Costa, which I assume is the same shit in a different toilet.

Yeah, if you gotta work as a service drone in a big corporation you could do a lot worse than choosing Starbucks.  By and large they take pretty good care of their people, other than that whole thing where they're laying people off and closing stores due to 2G2D.  Of course they don't use fair trade coffee beans, and their coffee kind of sucks, but other than that it's ok I guess.

In Britain I guess it doesn't really matter if Starbucks gives their employees health insurance since it's free anyway.  And their other benefits (401K, stock options) are kind of a joke considering that your contribution must be some % of your earnings that gets witheld, and somebody making what they pay doesn't have anything to spare anyhow.

Yeah, Starbucks is a much better business compared to, say, GameStop, which shits on its employees with a smile and won't do anything to fix that since they are rolling in the dough despite 2G2D.

That whole "we pay you on a prepaid debit card" thing must really suck.

The way they screw over the farmers is enough justification not to drink their coffee imo.  And isn't that prepaid debit card thing at gamestop a rumor?  I think willco said it was bullshit.

From the Secret Santa 2008 thread:

Quote from: Bloodwake
Fuck GameStop and their pay card, fuck my boss for being too lazy to put me on direct deposit, fuck me for not realizing this would be a problem earlier. Fuck Berea for not letting me have a car, fuck my bank for closing the only location in the town I'm in right now.  FUCK.

Clearly you don't drink very much coffee otherwise you would know that Starbucks is competitively priced.

Why don't you guys pick bigger and more evil targets to attack?  Like The GAP.

Starbucks does its own "Fair Trade" thing, though a couple of their whole bean coffees are Fair Trade certified.

Starbucks Coffee Company initiated C.A.F.E. (Coffee and Farmer Equity) Practices to evaluate, recognize, and reward producers of high-quality sustainably grown coffee. C.A.F.E. Practices is a green coffee sourcing guideline developed in collaboration with Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), a third-party evaluation and certification firm. C.A.F.E. Practices seeks to ensure that Starbucks sources sustainably grown and processed coffee by evaluating the economic, social and environmental aspects of coffee production against a defined set of criteria, as detailed in the C.A.F.E. Practices Guidelines. Starbucks defines sustainability as an economically viable model that addresses the social and environmental needs of all the participants in the supply chain from farmer to consumer.

That's pretty bullshit actually.  When you buy all the coffee beans in Ethiopia so that you can control the price and then sell the coffee for 15-20 times more than you paid for it, that's not "fair".  And wiki says that only 6% of their coffee is Fair Trade certified.

In other news, for revenge I decided to hold a business meeting today at Costa, a few doors down (more than 3).
