Is Gamefly good?
« on: February 25, 2009, 09:14:04 PM »
Is it worth getting gamefly?  I've been too burned on netflix and how it takes 8,000 years to get anything new so I never gave gamefly a second look.  If you put stuff in your queue do you get it close to when the game is actually released?  How long are the waits for new games?  Like for instance, how long is the wait for Fear2 on X360 right now?

Also do you get discs that are all goo and stuff and might damage your disc drive?  Sometimes netflix discs are shaaaaady and I don't want a jacked disc killing my blu-ray drive or x360 drive.

A bit offtopic, but it's a shame we don't have any game rental services in Europe. At least not where I live.

It forces you to pirate shit instead.

I got 50 Cent within a day. It's hit or miss, though. Sometimes it can take a bit to get shipped, sometimes its instant. I think the service is good though, for what it does and what it offers. Look for a month trial and use that so you get some decent milage on your trial before you know if you want to keep using it.

All the discs I've received were good quality and had zero issue

I'm probably gonna subscribe to Gamefly for the one game out at a time deal.  I was originally planning to get gamefly at the start of last summer, but I got lazy and forgot about it.

Been using them for years now. I love the service and the fast turn around time. It also helps that i'm near a distribution center. Also buying "used" games from them with their rewards is awesome. Getting "new" games day of release for sometimes 15 dollars off is great.

Most new games are for sale at $50, but if you have been a member for a year or longer, you get an extra 10% discount which brings the price down to $45.  Pretty good savings to rent a brand new game and keep it, especially if you plan on buying it anyway.

Gamefly's great at first when there's a ton of games you want to play and you're a new member so you get preferential treatment re: new games, but after a while they start sucking.  About a month ago I shipped out the two games I had, they received them, and then it took two whole weeks for them to ship and me to receive two different games.  I then cancelled because a) fuck that, and b) there isn't a ton of new games I want to play at the moment.  Didn't help that they never shipped out Skate 2.

But then again, games are and stay at $60 for a while and Blockbuster's selection is horrible (and they rape you with prices anyway).

They really just need to have 1-day shipping on their games; if Netflix can do it (and do it reliably), so can Gamefly.

there is a way to trick their system. Send back both games and don't have anything in your Q. Whatever game you put in your Q and first will get preferential treatment over people who are selecting it as a second choice game in their Q. It works 99% of the time day before with new releases. I understand those on the east coast seem to have more problems, and this might help expedite the process of getting new games.

For every set number of months they give you gamefly dollars as well which makes those keep it prices even better. They also do special's where they give you 10 buck codes that can be combined with the member's gamefly dollars for even more savings.

when does the preferential treatment end? i've had them for damn near 2 years now and they're still pretty good about sending me new releases

oh and the keep it now option kicks ass. i can generally get a new release for $45 after taxes

I like Gamefly for new releases, tends to be a good deal buying them that way. I've had a few mishaps, though, where they suddenly decide to mark a game that they had already received as missing, and they have sent the wrong games a few times.

Haven't had any issues with it myself. But a question for those who do keep it now.

If you keep the game, does Gamefly mail you the game's case and Instruction booklet? Or are you stuck with the envelope they shipped it in?

Signed up for gamefly again. Hopefully I'll get 50 Cent.

How long does it take games to get sent out?
Depends.  What time did you sign up?  It'll probably ship out tomorrow morning (at the earliest), and you'll get it Monday.

I live less than 6 hours from their new distribution center in Austin, TX and the turnaround is still abysmal. Plus they never ship me anything that has is even remotely popular. If it has medium availability or lower, I'm SOL.

I reopened my account at like 10ish maybe later. My 3 games are(it's 3 at a time for $20) 50 Cent, Afro, and Rock Band 2(PS2).

Wait, how did a new member like you get the 3-at-a-time plan for only $20?  iirc it takes 60 days of membership, then you have to pay around $30 a month for that plan.

I have issues with my queue being less of a queue and more of a suggestion pool from which Gamefly randomly chooses a game to send me.

Also, my shipping center is in Pittsburgh. So, last weekend I go visit my brother in Philly, and I drop a game in the mail box Friday night. So, you know, that means it gets picked up on Saturday. Well, Gamefly didn't receive the game until Tuesday. I understand there was a non-working day for the USPS in the middle of that, but it seems to me I should be able to have a game picked up by the post and sent intrastate within two days.

Maybe I'm nitpicking, but it seems like the turnaround is getting worse and worse the longer I have the service. And, I mean, I have a full queue, so I don't see why there's an extra day between when they acknowledge having received my returned game and sending me another game.

But it's not like I'm going to quit, so I should probably quit my bitching.

imo, just rent at blockbuster

it's $9 and you can get your game right away and can keep for a while, well over a week (actually a month, but they charge you and then refund you after you return it, but i just keep for like a week+)

no turnaround time
no having to worry about shit getting lost in the mail
no "short wait, long wait" stuff, you get game immediately

all at an expense of a few dollars extra.  how many good games release in a month that are worth renting? 1 or 2?  so it's actually the same price when you think about it

also, there's a blockbuster game pass if you want to use that...i think $19.99 month

oh and there's a never-ending "rent 2 for $15" promotion

Oh, that's the other thing that had me at a loss.

Two weeks ago I send two games in from my mailbox at home on the same day.

Three days later, they acknowledge that they've received one of the two games. The next day, the other arrived.

Maybe I'm ignorant to the intricacies of the USPS, but it seems to me that if I send two items from the same mailbox to the same location on the same day that they should arrive at their destination on the same day. Maybe I'm crazy to think that, but I kind of doubt it.

Huh. Gottaplay seems to have a shipping center in Maryland. Bully for me.

My concern is that they'd have a garbage selection of games, or that they would not have enough of a stock for new/popular games to make the money I'd pay for the service worth my while. It's a devil you know v. the devil you don't know circumstance. I mean, I get my shit with Gamefly, it just takes a while.

Yeah, of late they've been ignoring my queue, but I also got Fallout 3 within about a week of release, which was pretty stunning to me. You brought it up, so I felt like I should chime in, but I haven't had the issues long term like you have. So, I don't know.

But I'm inclined to believe that the shipping center is the problem. I think the USPS is pretty great.

On the one hand, I like that the HQ for Gottaplay is 15 miles down the road. On the other hand, they don't sell games. I've only ever bought one game from Gamefly, and that was years ago before my current run with the service, but I'd like the option to buy games at a discounted price.

I'll look into Gamerang, and in the meantime see if Gamefly gets any better. I don't mind the waiting so much, except when it makes no sense (shipping intrastate and taking three postal days to process, two sent on same day, arrive on different days). I really only play games Friday-Sunday, but that means I absolutely want my games available on those days.

Gamefly has been pretty good about that, but not great. Maybe Gamerang can do better.

Blockbuster sucks, though.  Their selection of games is ridiculously small, and what they do have is in low quantities.  When I look for a game there, I come up empty-handed more often than not.  Maybe they'd be good if they had their shit together.
