I think I was drugged last night
« on: February 26, 2009, 11:32:06 AM »
I had the worst audit in my entire retail career yesterday.  I was nitpicked (dust under a non-operational register?) to death.  After I got off work, I immediately headed to the bar to have a few drinks.  Now, I can handle my liquor and all I had was a couple of beers.  Then I ordered a Nuts 'n Berries to cap off the evening.  I left my drink unattended and went outside to take a call from a headhunter.  At this time, I was just getting buzzed.  Sober enough to talk to a RD for another company about a job opportunity.

After I came back, and slowly worked on my drink as I watched the Maryland/Duke game.  Then I get hit - like in a second - with blurry vision and felt totally disoriented, so I had a friend take me home.  I don't remember much after that, but I woke up around 4 AM in my bedroom in cold sweats and feeling like crap.  It's now 11 AM and I still don't feel quite right.  I don't know what the hell happened.

I certainly wasn't innebriated and two beers and a Nuts 'n Berries doesn't even touch my tab from last week (4 pints of beer, 5 Jack & Cokes, 1 shot of scotch, 1 shot of bourbon, 1 Guiness, 2 Nuts 'n Berries and 1 Irish car bomb).  That's relatively routine for me, and I was able to wake up and go to work at 9 AM after a quick mug of coffee.

The place was too packed to really know what the hell happened.  I'm just glad my friend happened to be there - if I was flying solo, I guess I would've been raped or something.

Dude, Triumph, he wrote me an action plan for properly dusting cabinets located underneath the cashwrap that are enclosed.  I also got docked for my storage room.

My favorite part was when he docked like 50 points, because from the point where they stocked beverages at 9PM or so the previous night to 12PM the following day - there were like a dozen sold.  So it was not properly stocked.

Yup, you're on his shitlist.  Management probably wants you gone after that incident with the dumb new employee at the bar.

The alternative is that he's just a mega anal-retentive dork.  I've had bosses like that and after establishing boundaries we were able to get along fairly well.  I swear that retail middle management attracts a special breed of nit-picking, minutiae digging wanker.  Even my coolest dm had his hot buttons that you HAD to take care of.  Didn't matter if your sales were always up, your secret shops were always 100 and the store was always clean- if you didn't answer the phone the "right" way or didn't have your shirt tucked in (even in the back room!  even if you were off the clock!) he'd ride your ass.

Man, thank god I don't have to worry about that shit anymore.  Come to your senses and get out, the sooner you do the less bitter you'll be in the end.

Plus, if I quit retail, people won't drug me and haul me off to some rape dungeon and have their way with me.

I don't think I'm on his bad side.  I inherited a truly awful store and he did say as he left that he thought it's a huge improvement and to keep up the great sales work.  I'm only store in my region that is comping up and in this economy, I will take that win.  Before I took over, the store was hemorrhaging money.  My DM's goal was to install me and have it not lose so much damn money (we're talking just $2,000 alone in manual price changes per week), but I went and started making money.  Silly me.

I got the equivalent of a D for my store, though.  What the heck.

I moved back to the D.C. metropolitan area.  It's been nice.  I got family, friends, etc.  Local sports.  I was digging my job until recently.  Our market VP canned two Regionals, and the panic has been trickling down ever since.  It's always nice to know when you're the only store making money that you could lose your job at any moment if you do not follow some Company Directive of the Week to 100% compliance - which flies in the face of reducing payroll and added operations.

Not this canard. Sure, rape is partly about power, but I fail to see how sexual attraction plays no part.

Explain this graph:

Women tend to be raped when they are most attractive and when they are in their child-bearing years, not when they are most vulnerable. If rape was about power, and attraction had nothing to do with it, the graph would be inverted--most rape victims would be over the age of 65 or under 12, when they are physically weaker.

I'm pretty sure you would've taken a standard psychology class in that whacky Canadien education system of yours - rape is not about finding the weakest or most vulnerable.  It's about power and fitting a profile.  Could have to do with humiliation, mommy issues, etc.  Most folks don't rape old women or infants because those are not the demographics that sparked such an adverse behavior.  It's about degradation and control, and for a lot of of rapists, those urges occur during or after adolescence - when they're exposed to women in that age range.

Duh.  Would've thought better from you.

I see no facts or arguments to back up any of your assertions. Your assertions are only supported by a philosophical position that the only significant human motive is power, and power is located in groups.

Yes rape is violence. The victim is obviously victimized, and without violence or the threat of violence, there is no rape. That doesn't mean the only motive is power.

You have two explanations for the data: (a) male rapists seek victims to sexually assault who are most likely to turn them on sexually; or (b) male rapists all have mommy issues--nicely pseudo-Freudian. Since most kids are raised by mothers who are between the ages of 30 and 50, it's very odd that the graph peaks between the ages of 18 and 38, just crashing around the time when menopause hits (the evolutionary psych answer is pretty obvious).

Eh, I don't really like them very much, by tech death I mean bands like Necrophagist, Obscura and Martyr.

Obscura is that band whose CD I picked up last night, it's awesome.  Drummer and guitarist (not the singer) are both ex-Necrophagist.  Also you'll notice the fretless bass player (sounds a lot like the bass on Death's Individual Thought Patterns).  :rock

Martyr are a sick Canook band.

http://www.martyr-canada.com/htm/martyr_frames06_e.htm

They have a DVD clip on their home page.  Mmmm, Jackson guitars.  :drool

Both are super underground and a metal dude will totally give you a reach around if you know about them.

Canadien, please.

I'd also recommend you check out this book, which has been used in psychology classes, profiling, etc.

The fact of that matter (damn crazy facts and statistics!) - most sexual assaults is premeditated, many rapists have some sort of sexual dysfunction, opportunistic rape victims are the minority, many rapists are family members or friends and most sexual assaults occur in the home.

But, yes, your argument that rape is mostly about sexual desire is much stronger.  CDC, FBI, NCVC and other such agencies and organizations have it all wrong.

None of those factors speaks to the motive. They are all red-herrings.

For example, how does the premeditated nature of a crime affect whether the crime was motivated by power or sex? OR both, which is my actual position. And these are not exclusive motives; there are, of course, many others--varying depending on the type of rape. And I never said most rapes were opportunistic. If simple power were the motivation--and I can't believe you can't see this--then yes opportunistic rapes would happen more often. THAT WAS MY POINT. The lack of opportunistic rapes is counter-evidence to the rape = power hypothesis.

anyway, let us reason by analogy.

Men want x. Some men can't get x. Some men who can'tget x use violence to get x.
Main motive: x.

Men want money. Some men can't get money. Some of these men use violence to get money.
Main motive: money

Men want respect. Some men can't get respect. Some of these men use violence to get respect.
Main motive: respect

Men want sex. Some man can't get sex. Some of these men use violence to get sex.
Main motive: sex. I MEAN POWER

Most Men want sex with young women. Some men can't get women to have sex with them. Some of those men use violence to get sex.
Main motive: sex with young women.  I MEAN POWER

Your position--this is not a strawman--is that the only time men don't use violence to obtain something is when they want sex, an absurd position.

I'm not sure why there exists such an opposition to the idea that rape is even partially motivated by sex. Does it stem from the justifiable opposition to the old, irrational notion that women turned on their attackers, thus mitigating their attackers crime? This isn't a means of justification! Using violence to obtain a personal want is never justified --especially when the form of violence used is so degrading.

This wasn't directed at you, didn't mean to come across as flippant.

I think the truth lies somewhere in-between. Your average date-rapist just wants some tail and feels unable to get it through normal means and would rather just pop a pill into some girl's drink.

A more serious serial-rapist who also brutalizes women in the act are probably somewhat getting off on THE POWER, but mostly because they've been met with rejection so often that it's turned them bitter. Wanting to get some is still probably the root cause, but it's been morphed and twisted into something else.

I dismissed the stats because they were red-herrings. How does past criminal record indicate what motivated the offender. Most violent offenders, regardless of the crime, are past offenders. Why should it be different with rapists? And how does this impact motive, again? Violent criminals often attack those they know. Again, why should this be different with rapists? And how does this speak to motive? (and, again, my position is not that sex is the only thing that motivates rapists. I'm also willing to concede some--though not many--rapists aren't even motivated by sex)
