Just got this game this morning. I think I'm going to do a full write-up a bit later, but not sure what to do about pictures-- don't have a capture card and this game doesn't have a clean pause screen.

Despite this essentially being the THIRD version of KOF 2002 (following the original and Neowave), it's shaped up very nicely. There's a whopping 66 characters to choose from, culling from KOF '99-2002. All of the bosses have been made fully playable (look, they can crouch now!), and Goenitz and Geese, from the PS2 port of 2002, have also been thrown in. In fact, Geese has a disgustingly-powerful EX version available that makes him into Nightmare Geese from RBS.

The game has one "new" character in the form of Nameless, who replaces the one missing character from the original games not to make it in. SNK removed K9999 apparently due to legal problems; the character resembled Akira's Tetsuo far too much (not just in design, he even had the same voice actor!), so Nameless takes his place with a similar set of moves.

The sprites are the same as the past games, although some characters have gotten new moves. All of the old backgrounds have been scrapped and replaced with brand-new 3D fight locales that are bursting with color, animation, and tons of character cameos. 2002 was pretty dull background-wise, and this game really makes up for it. The music is also completely brand-new, being new versions of classic themes. It's arranged-only this time, which is also a good thing.

But it's hard for me to get too excited over this game with KOF '98 Ultimate Match heading to XBLA, and more importantly KOF XII on the horizon. Plus the lack of online play means more time is going to be spent on the recently-released Street Fighter IV. In comparison to last year's '98 Ultimate Match, 2002 definitely stacks up, but I think I prefer the former; I like the earlier KOFs over the later versions, and have a preference for those characters' play styles. '98 Ultimate is also more visually-impressive, I think, and has a ton more music, although it's all old tracks.

Still, if you like KOF, you definitely can't go wrong.

NCSX has some pictures up.

Was 2002 still using the Striker system?  I forgot when they stopped that.

2002 got rid of the striker system and went back to the old team system. So you get the newer stuff that got introduced during the striker games but without the strikers and back to teams of three.

In a nutshell this game is "KOF '98 2," cast is changed up and moves are different. They did a really goid job of making characters that are in both Ultimate and Unlimited feel unique from each other, especially with the added attacks.

Here's some more trivia for ya-- The voice actor for Kusanagi (ANOTHER Kyo clone, lol) is the same guy who played Kaneda!  The two characters even have a special intro in the original 2002 (which is included in this game).

Kinda bland.  He's supposed to be another clone, this time a fusion of Kyo and K' and ZZZZZzzzzz

Just a guy in all black with spiky hair.  K9999 was cooler.

Hmm, lessee--

All of 'em except the two non-fighters, of course!   :lol  At this point, all you need is '98 UM, 2002 UM, XI (tag fighter), Regulation A (this is more of a 3D fighter), and XII when that comes out to get the best experience of the bunch.  No need for the rest.

What's yer online tag and on which system do you play?  I'm always up for a game!

Playing around with this some more and am enjoying it, but I still stand that '98 Ultimate Match is the better game.  This is still fun as hell, too bad none of my friends will probably want to play it.   :-\

Is that Lin I see??!  :o

Yup, he's in!

Dude, I'm on yer friends list, I added you ages ago. I'm on the 360, also got one of those SF4 fightpads.

GT: Glodeus Rush (I'm gonna change it back to InfectedGib soon though)

Oh and btw can I say that you have like the best taste in games. The things you don't like, I don't seem to like either.

Also wanted to ask if anyone is using the official Prima guide to SF4. Amazon has it for like £9, I think I'll bite if it really helps your game. The only other guide I have this gen is the Blue Dragon one which is really good if you want 1000/1000.

I took some pics but they came out kinda shitty.  I think I might see if the living room TV has a screenshot function...

There was a post on mmcafe saying guile (SvC sprite) was a hidden character to tie into SvC Chaos Ultimate match. I guess by your reaction it's bullshit though!

SvC Ultimate Match?!  Gotta be a joke.   :lol

Anyway Guile is most definitely not in there; I have everyone unlocked and if he were in for some weird reason, there'd be copyright for it.  Someone is pulling your leg.
