I still can't believe the governor of louisiana, a state hit by natural disasters, would mock this. For Hawaii mocking this would be like mocking the idea of the govt. building levy's in Louisiana.  :lol

How many americans do volcanos kill each year? It's probably at least 5!

All volcano eruptions are annual phenomenon, therefore using annual statistics are perfectly relevant. (you fucking distinguished mentally-challenged fellow)

I'm agreeing with you!!

I went to go get the mail yesterday afternoon and halfway to the end of the driveway a volcano erupted in my front yard and almost got me. I said to myself, "This wouldn't happen if someone was monitoring volcano activity."

I was one of the lucky ones!

FoC fails again.

It's amazing how people have already forgotten Mount St. Helens.

and
I bet the government never hired geologists to check whether Texas actually had active volcanoes that might need monitoring. Thankfully, the Invisible hand did the work instead, finding there were none and making sure lazy government geologists didn't try to get cushy Texas volcano monitoring positions, which weren't needed.

none of the victims were from texas.

I can't believe 1/20,000th of the US budget is wasted on this useless garbage.

You think people in Hawaii maybe, just maybe would like geologists to keep a check on their many volcano's in case one is going to erupt and kill people? Hmm?

This is simplistic, but I wish the government was set up like this:

I pay 25-30% in taxes. 90% of those taxes goto my home state and city.

The national government only funds science, military and interstate affairs (FBI, trade, highways etc etc). No UHC, no social security, no welfare. It's all handled by the individual states. No more earmarks tucked into bills that fund pet projects clear across the country. No need for Senators and their million dollar payrolls.

If your state is fucking up, you have the option to vote those bastards out. Or you can move to a state that is doing a good job. Populations would shift based on the solvency of the state governments ..  rewarding good governing.

I have much more in common with a Democrat politician in Ohio than a Democrat politician in California. I have much more in common with a Republican in Ohio than a Republican in South Carolina. Why am I supposed to suffer their choices when they come into a powerful position?

Toxic, I don't like the idea of states being treated as consumer products on the free-market. People have family, community, and economic ties that don't allow them to simply move to different states based on prevailing market conditions. It's not like buying a bag of chips or a pair of jeans. And states are full of people who simply can't move on their own--children, the elderly, the mentally challenged, physically disabled--are the most reliant on services that you would leave solely to individual states: education, health care, social security, etc. They can't simply move when they're receiving a shitty education or poor health care.

States and regions are often prone to unique natural, social, or economic disaster that are too severe for them to handle on their own. Having people simply flooding out of those states when trouble hits might exasperate the problems. For example, by shrinking an already insufficient tax base.

This doesn't mean that states should be homogeneous, but they should each receive a minimum amount of funding allowing them to provide a certain level of services. Canada, for example, has equalization payment, ensuring that provinces get a certain amount of funding. (In practice, however, it is highly political, with a great deal of pandering to Quebec.)
