Shocker: Playstation 3 Might Be Replaced Before the 10 Year Mark

Sony's always said the PS3 would be their gaming platform for a decade, but SCEE (Sony Computer Entertainment Europe) boss David Reeves said he doesn't know if it'll go 8, 9 or 10 years. Not sure this matters, those dates being so far out, but several things come to mind.

First off, the PS2 is still going strong after the PS3 went on sale, to mostly mainstream buyers and the existing base of gamers there who continue to buy PS2 games. So this isn't a dead stop date by any means. Secondly, it means PS4 could be here sooner than we expect, even if David Reeves says "it's not on the horizon". By years. Because Sony's mantra was previously that the PS3 was a "10-year console".

It is possible that the point of this "8, 9 or 10 year" statement is to soften up the public for the possibility that the PS4 will come sooner rather than later.

But I think the statement, made in the context of the statement that other console makers having their systems out first, is based on outdated thinking of competition based on hardware specs alone. The PS3 is a fine piece of hardware, and its potential hasn't been tapped in terms of making it easier to program for, and giving it true marketplace and friend finding abilities in the cloud. Work on the software, then talk about new hardware. You don't need to hint at new machines to counter statements that competitor will have machines out first. Just work out the kinks with what you already have.

PS4 in 2012. PSP2 3000 right after.  Bet on it

Well, the Xbox was shitcanned because of choices made at the time of inception that doomed it to be unprofitable forever. That .. and low sales.

The same could be said about the ps3.

Maybe that's the realization that the Sony suits have come to. The only way to increase marketshare is through reduced prices. Reduced prices means more losses overall. Not an acceptable trade off for the former industry leader.

I don't care much for 60fps. Only race games and fighting games need that imo. But it's always a plus when you have that in other genres too....

Other than that, the graphics are pretty nice this gen. The first few X360 games were pretty underwhelming.
But graphics have been very improved and they'll keep improving.

New consoles will also bring longer dev cycles. I don't think that's a good plan now.

Yeah, I agree that in general most developers are struggling to put out decent running + good looking games in 720p on these consoles.  I'm definitely ready for a power boost so we can smooth out the games and get rid of all this sub-720p bullshit.

Too bad we can't just do expansion packs where you plug in a new video card & more ram

I don't expect 60fps next gen,in fact i am sure that 99.9% of next gen games will run at 30 fps,resolution will be somewhere between 720p-1080p with majority of games 720p or close to it.

I only expect that next-gen will be "true" hd gen,this is a fake one,resolution jump won't be that drastic.

Devs cycles shouldn't be longer unless some strange shitty architectures are introduced and i find that very unlikely.

The consoles are expensive enough as it is currently.  If these next gen consoles are all going to start out at $500 or higher, I might just get a high end PC (or build one) and just live off of emulation from there on.
