they shouldn't be allowed to, IMO. if you're getting money from the government, it should be spent at a supermarket where the prices are reasonable.

I haven't lived in the hood for about a decade. Can you still sell your food stamps to other people and let them use them? Most people I knew would use bout 60% of them and then sell the remainder for half price and use the money to buy other shit (usually weed).

For about 14 months. I rented a place near Cherry and LaGrange (Demi will now where this is). Then I stayed on the East Side in Downtown Cleveland for a little while.

yeah, I've never understood what a food stamp was. I remember going to a cheap bread store (like, really cheap prepackaged bread, both in quality and cost) and a big sign saying "we accept food stamps," I always thought it was like a school lunch voucher where you take it there and were given a list of supplies.

It's just a debit card-like thing the government gives you if you're living in poverty or living in near-poverty... and you can buy food with it.

I figured you could use it to buy food at a gocer... but junk food at a convenice store? That seems really shady. That and the fact that they even have a sign outside advertising they take them means a lot of people must be using them these days.

As I recall it looked more like Monopoly money.

I remember it being cards with places for stamps to be placed on them, kind of like the McDonalds Monopoly board.

Yea, back in the 70's it was like Tet described. Then they switched to monopoly money sometime in the 80's. Then the debit card (which I never knew about).

In my stints in retail and grocery, I've come across food stamps many a time.

They used the monopoly money stuff up until about 2-3 years ago. Now they use light blue (at least in my area but the colors may differ elsewhere) EBT cards. If you see "EBT" on the machine where you slide your debit or credit cards, that place takes food stamps as well.

I haven't seen monopoly money food stamps in a while. Mostly just the cards these days.

The real reason probably has to do with trading them for money, counterfeiting, ease of use for both parties (cashier and recipients) and the like. I never really saw an incident where people were giggling over someone else using food stamps, at least in my experience.

Yeah,I didn't know about the debit cards either, I just thought no one used food stamps any longer.
