PR talk is PR talk. I think the botched marketing for KZ2 is a better example of Sony's fuckup strategy. A highly marketable game that is actually genuinely awesome, and it sees less of a marketing push than even Resistance 2. Tightening of marketing budgets is natural for the economic climate, but talk about a dumb as shit time to do so.

Although their position in the console race probably doesn't have all that much to do with the complexity of the system. The price of the system, on the other hand, that's a real problem. It's a second-hand market, but even so, I managed to score a Xbox 360 Premium for a little over $100. The cheapest working PS3 available on Ebay at the same time cost nearly three times as much. The source of Sony's woes isn't much of a mystery, and it will be interesting to see what the next system will be like. If there is another pure Playstation console; hopefully Microsoft and Sony can work together.

Old quote, but it's amazing how these guys ignored history. One of the big reasons for the success of the Sega Genesis was that it was built around a well-known processor (at the time). Easy to program for ... so they received many more exclusives and often had the superior port versus the SNES.

the problem seems to be that Sony just doesn't understand software very well. actually I guess that's the problem with the Japanese game industry in general atm. game development has started to have more in common with general software development, and there's never been much of a software industry in Japan. hence MS success

It's not too soon to tell about the PS3; it's 3rd place in terms of sales, 2nd place in terms of quality. I don't see a radical change ever happening that will make everything suddenly different. The PS3 itself cost $400 while the direct competition cost $200; both share many of the big games and almost all of the games are better on the $200 one. Even though it is the worst system Sony has put out, I still get a lot of enjoyment from the exclusive games; outside of games it's also my blu ray player too. But I'm not everyone. Not everyone has the luxury to own a good PC, PS3, 360, Wii, DS, PSP, etc. and not worry about getting one system to do everything. Honestly, if I had to pick one and was on a budget, the 360 is the obvious choice here; even picking the 360 means I'm not part of the hoi polloi since they've all chosen the Wii.

Plus, how can you hate Sony after they single handily butt-fucked both Nintendo and Sega in both quality and sales?

It is not too soon to tell about PS3.

PS3's place was firmly cemented after the last holidays. While other systems are moving ahead, the PS3 is selling less than it was a year prior. It is rare to find a successful console that hasn't seen some increase in sales from the prior year at this point in the generation. The PS3 is dead last.

Still, even with its dead last performance, if the system said anything other than "PlayStation 3", it wouldn't even have half the sales it has now. The "PlayStation" name still has a lot of juice but at $400 while your competition is half that price, all you're going to get is the Sony faithful.

Is anyone really happy that Nintendo is in first place this time around? At least when Sony was on top they were delivering content to please a wide range of people. Nintendo is running a very tight business, but it most certainly does not benefit most game fans. Even the Gamecube was a much better platform than the Wii, at this point.

Different companies lead different generations. Big deal. Nintendo has only impacted positively on my gaming this gen - I've got games coming out my ears on the 360 and the occasional thing on the Wii that can't be done elsewhere.

The Wii's new features are great when used properly - maybe next gen we'll see better use of it on Nintendo and other consoles. They took a big risk, and the potential rewards were great. It paid off so good for them.

Precisely. The PS2 had a very casual user base in addition to the hardcore. The system received a wide variety of support that satisfied just about everyone in some form or another. Nintendo has failed to do the same.

Of course, to be honest, I'm not exactly torn to see the majority of games I care about appear on the 360, PS3, or PC. I'm actually pretty happy that the Wii has been all but ignored by major developers. That said, there are a number of titles that have been released in Japan which I wish would see the light of day in the US. I had to go through some serious hassle to play Fragile, but there are certainly others. Games of that variety would most certainly have been released in the US on PlayStation 2. The amount of shovelware present on the Wii (in the US) puts even the DS and GBA to shame. It's ridiculous!

Nintendo at least should have gone region free on the Wii for everything, including the VC. They're some Japanese titles that I'm interested in as well, and with its meager release schedule, a wider access to import titles would've been ideal.
