I watched a friend playing my copy a couple of weeks back and was reminded how ridiculously awesome Bioshock is.

Don't have any expectations for the sequel though.

Thinking about buying it again for the 360 this time. One question: how does the hack work with a controller? It could be pretty challenging with the point and click of a mouse, so I'm wondering how it works with a gamepad.

Stupid easy. Honestly, I found the hacking easier to complete with the 360's shit d-pad as opposed to the stick.

Yeah, contrived is an understatement.  Bioshock was all about the imagination that went into it.  This is certainly showing zero imagination thus far.

My reaction to the Big Sister/Mama was the same when I saw the Big Daddy for the first time: I didn't know what to make of it and concluded that the art style was at least unique.

It was the story and the narrative that sold me on the Bioshock and that is what I'm looking forward to in the sequel.

Bioshock is a game that should have just been left alone. It was perfect. Any future iterations could never live up to the original.

I really enjoyed the first BioShock, but since I only played it recently and paid ~$20 for it, I'm not sure how I feel about a potentially lame sequel that is going to cost me $60.  They can make me buy the $80 limited edition if it keeps making fun of Libertarians, tho.

It could also be damned awesome. With so much already in place, perhaps more time and effort can be put into making it a thoroughly great game. Bioshock featured an incredible contained world and masterful narrative, but it's certainly not without serious flaws, and in some ways it was a step back from games like Deus Ex.

I can only see Bioshock 2 as an improvement gameplay-wise.  Atmosphere and story are 50/50 that they'll get it right again, though the team is quite good at creating atmosphere.

After Bioshock I'd think the team would know what worked in the gameplay and what didn't.  So I expect Bioshock 2 to have better combat variety so you're not just fighting the same 3 enemies over and over everywhere with the same limited selection of plasmids/weapons.

I don't think Bioshock really had that amazing of end game/ending either, so I don't care if a sequel comes in and maybe destroys the lore.  I'm looking forward to this.

yeah, they can make it even better, I'm just saying that at worst it wouldn't affect the first game.

playing a bit of Bioshock 1 just now I am reminded about how many things in the core gameplay could be improved; I also remember how awesome the game was.  It's one of the few games where I really don't mind the busy HUD because it fits so well with the game.

From that site, it seems that you're going to be a PI or a conspiracy theorist in possibly the 1990's (there's internet websites but France isn't on the euro yet).

I'm guessing that somebody else has gained control over the Big Daddies and changed their anatomy to make them fast and skinny kidnappers.  That must mean that Rapture is still functional if there's a need for little Adam-carrying girls and that somebody else got in power (who hasn't totally lost their mind like the splicers).  Maybe there was an Adam drought for a while and some Splicer butt-baby had enough sanity left to start up a new operation?  Would be interesting if that guy was somehow related to you or knew you like in the last game.

It sort of sounds like the Big Daddies were combined with splicers which makes me wonder how that all happened.  It would be kind of ironic if Rapture had a new golden age with the loss of Ryan, Fontaine, and Adam.

Maybe I should give this game another chance. I never got through it. In fact, I never got far. I gave up because I was on some stupid fetch quest and it bored me.

I never managed to finish it either, just got sidelined about halfway through and never got around to finishing. I'm pretty sure my save got wiped out when my mem card got fried a bit back too. :'(

That's what Levine is doing right now, this is a different team. The guy who made Fort Frolic is directing/producing whatever this game though :D

The only real boss fight was Fontaine.  Big Daddies and Cohen's swarm might count.

It looks like they're basically coming up with a new gameplay formula.  That's good because the old mechanics don't look like they could have used too many improvements.  Hopefully the changes are for the better so it's best to just wait and see.

There were epic boss fights in Bioshock? What? Was the 360 version different then the PC version?

You could argue Steinman and Fontaine but that's reaching and not at all epic. Even the Big Daddies could be called mini-bosses if you wanted as well. Epic maybe if you were setting up nothing but electric bolts and using telekinesis and gas tanks and some freezing for good measure.

so you don't play as some PI and instead play as the og big daddy? awesome!

more info below

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Summary: You're a Big Daddy, and you get to use the drill and rivet gun. And you can use plasmids too. You can take little sisters from other Big Daddies and take them around Rapture to collect ADAM like you see happening in BioShock 1.

It's 10 years since the first game. The Big Sister returns to rapture, bringing back the Little Sisters with her. You play as the original Big Daddy. You can use the drill, the rivet gun, and you can still use plasmids.

Little Sisters have been given a new look to be less creepy, as you're seeing them from the eyes of their protectors. You don't get your own Little Sister from the start, as you're a renegade Big Daddy. So you fight other Big Daddies to get your own sister. You can still harvest them, but the other option has been changed to "adopt" instead of rescue. If you adopt the sister, she'll ride on your shoulders, and you can go around Rapture looking for corpses for her to collect ADAM from. When your sister goes to harvest ADAM, a wave of Splicers will come and start attacking to try and harvest her. You have to hold them off until she finishes harvesting. You gain some ADAM from this, but not enough to tide you through the game. You can permanently rescue them, but the article doesn't say how.

The Big Sister is one of the surviving little sisters from the last game. She's the new ruler of Rapture, and is the main antagonist of the game. With each Big Daddy you kill, the game lets you know how close you are to incurring the wrath of the Big Sister. When you do, the little sister you're with will sing a song about how the Big Sister doesn't want you playing with her, then you get jumped.

The Big Daddy drill takes the place of the wrench. Can spin, but overheats so you can't run it constantly. You can do the Big Daddy charging shoulder bash. You can heal your hacked turrets/camera bots. Incinerate upgrades let you throw fireballs and shoot a stream of fire. Cyclone trap can be hit with incinerate and become a flaming cyclone trap. Upgrade trees are more diverse to give you more unique options.

It says they'll think twice about attacking you on their own, but if they're in groups they'll tear your shit up.

More info on big sister: "The Big Sister will always be a desperate, desperate fight...She can find you wherever you are, so you have to prepare for the fact that the hardest thing in the game is on the scent."

She's fast, stabs you with her ADAM needle, then uses TK to suck in all the stuff in the room as a shield, then launches it at you.

We get to see how ADAM gets extracted from Little Sisters for distribution.

You walk around on the sea floor outside of Rapture

Addendum: Vita Chambers aren't back in the same way as they were in the first game, but the same mechanic exists. Can be turned off.

Game is supposed to be scarier than BioShock 1.

Other info:There is confirmed multiplayer(no details), audio logs are back, and Fontaine Futuristics is a level in the game.
