finance topic for paper

yo, i figure most of you guys are pretty smart compared to the xfags over at OA so i'm requesting some help.  i figure i might get a couple legit responses after the initial gay-subtext humor

i have a monster 10-page (double-spaced :drool) finance paper due this week

basically, i need to choose a current topic in finance or economics and make an argument for or against it

for example, should we have bailed out the auto industry?

something like that is obviously pretty easy to do since there's a ton of info on the various bailouts but i'm looking for something a little more unique (but still easy to find info on) since i gotta give an 8-minute presentation on it as well.  a lot of people are probably gonna do it on the bailouts and stuff... idk, i wanna be different

anyone have some ideas?
hey

Make the case to return to the gold standard

Do one about Eastern Europe.  From their financial struggles to get into the EU to the current crisis they are going through.  Good sources to find and should be off the beaten track enough to get an A without too much legwork.

Greenspan's advocacy of lower interest rates in late 90s could also be an interesting topic.  This caused banks to move their money out of safer treasury bonds, due to a bad return on their investments, and pursue more riskier investment, such as collateralized debt obligations.

i specifically remember our prof discussing how many think greenspan's decisions in the 90s are to blame for the current situation

Some versions of the conspiracy around this include assassinating the motherfucking pope.  And I plan on using the name "Propaganda Due" for some project.  I'd like it to be something artistic.  A collaboration of some sort.  To fit the name.

You could take issue with the assumption that subprime loans were initial culprit for this whole mess, since it seems to have been the case that non-subprime mortgages lost their value just as fast. This doesn't seem to get a whole lot of play.

How about - comparing our current financial crisis to the Asian meltdown in the 90's... or about Sweden's nationalization of the banks a few years back.

That's a really interesting comparison.  The Asian financial crisis was a domino affect of many prinicples that could be juxtaposed against our system.
