I haven't seen the movie, but I have seen trailers, tv spots, and clips. Sean Penn looks like he is acting as a mentally challenged person. If someone didn't tell me that he was supposed to be gay, I would have thought that this is yet another I Am Sam.

Oh and I LOVED The Wrestler but I think Milk is the better movie. I'd put it just above Wrestler on my top favorites of the year. Rourke was better than Penn in his movie and deserved to win but Milk was the better movie. If anyone from Milk deserved an oscar it was Josh Brolin.

James Franco was pretty brilliant, too.

I typically hate Sean Penn, but I thought he was absolutely perfect in Milk.

To be honest, I am not planning on watching the movie. But from what I saw, Sean Penn's performance was weird to be honest. He seems troubled, and didn't give off a vibe that he was supposed to be gay.

I even did some googling, and other people are saying the same thing. They are saying Penn's performance was toned down version of I AM SAM, and not a gay person.

i love the way you feel empathy for the ram character all throughout the movie and think to yourself "wow, life is just kicking this poor guy's ass"

then in the scene towards the end where he parties with that young girl and sleeps through his dinner meeting with his daughter, you see exactly how his own carelessness led him to where he is

Sean Pean was doing I A Sam for the first act of the film.It annoyed me when I first saw the film. He is actually one of the weakest parts of the movie as Brolin does a better acting performance.

finally, an actualy response! Thanks for reading the OP. So he was pretty much playing his I AM SAM role. It is good to get a confirmation from someone. It has been bugging me every since I watched some clips.

I would think hollywood would get offended by him portraying a gay man like that.
