I still like to listen to some podcasts, more because its something to do on my commutes, but I never go to GAF, never check reviews, check what games are coming out, I don't really care anymore.

My xbox has been in repair for 1 month now, and I don't even care.

Only podcast I catch is the Borecast. I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer tho b/c I don't buy all the newest games that come out and am perfectly happy in my niche, nor do I care about nerdy technical issues (apart from slowdown) in games, nor do I play online in most games.

This is an admirable stance. Although online is usually better than vs. CPU as long as matchmaking is quick and you have the option to mute folks. I've had a few bad experiences with Xbox live. The featureset and functions are great, but the community itself is either ignorant or elitist. Alot of people don't like folks who have a headset but don't use it but I prefer it to everyone telling me I suck and booting me.

Holding yourself up to the standards of what GAF does/likes is probably a poor measure of hardcore gaming.

90% of my playtime is casual PC games or 10 dollar games that are 3 years old. I would rather spend 40 bucks on an European/Russian PC game than the latest crap Bioware dishes out.

Also, a hardcore gamer is someone like Frag. Who chews up and shits out arcane strat games in a weekend, not some tool who buys Killzone 2 on day 1. It's wierd how many people have it all mixed up.

I play tons of video games, listen to gaming podcasts (usually while doing something else) and visit gaf, but I just consider myself someone who like video games a lot. I don't really get what "hardcore gamer" entails.

That ain't hardcore, that is just being an old fart. When Frag beats COD on Veteran then he is hardcore. I guess you think the local Bridge club is hardcore too. Well they ain't.

high five. As a bonus, at least the euro/russian game taxes your brain and makes you figure out things on your own, and gives you plenty of "rope" so you can either build a nice bridge with it or hang yourself. The best part about Euro/Russian games is that they are some of the ones to get to $10 fastest.

How about COD: United Offensive on the hardest difficulty (which I did). That makes COD4 look like kindergarden in comparison.

also I played duplicate bridge competitively for years and still keep my ABCL membership current even though I'm without partner. God, I wish I could find a local to play bridge with again.

The message board, podcast and other gaming news media audience seems to generally enjoy games less than your common dudes. They might get "more" out of the games on some informational and obsessive level, but generally, it seems to diminish the basic fun to be had actually playing the games, with the spectacle of the actual industry hogging the center stage. I don't know if that's all that "hardcore."

-watch videos more than once in a blue moon
-know when E3 is
-care when E3 is
-want a Wii
-want to complain about Wii
-want a PS3
-want to complain about PS3
-want a PSP
-want to complain about PSP
-own more than 5 Xbox 360 games
-care to play but 3 additional 360 games (that are currently out)
-own more than 3 Nintendo DS games
-care to play any other Nintendo DS game (ever)

I think that about covers it. It's just one hobby and there are plenty of other things to do.

Good post, I totally feel the same way. People let things like fanboy bias, minute nitpicking of details, sales potential, harm their enjoyment of what they play. I'll admit I can sometimes feel guilty of it too, but I notice the days when I don't post on GAF are the days I get my most fulfilling gaming done.
