I keep four Paradox games with their expansions (EU3, Hearts of Iron 2, Victoria, and EU Rome) on my computer and always play one of those on a night when I don't feel like playing anything else. Comfort gaming rocks!

Wolfenstein 3D on an SNES emulator.  I had no idea the SNES version was so shitty that they have the Nazi speaking English.  My Jaguar version that has strafe mapped to the numberpad is better than it.

I played games for fun until the 360 came out. I haven't been able to enjoy a game in the same way since.

It's kind of sad, but I usually just like to pummel the cpu in Brawl every other night.  I would be very happy if I had friends to play this with me.  Old school sonic is awesome pick up and play gaming.

I don't know how I got these tastes exactly, but I only play games for fun.  GTA4 (yeah pnegroes), EDF, and especially Metroid Prime are the types of "weird" games that I genuinely thought were a lot of fun.  I nearly never go into any game with specific expectations on how it's played because that usually makes you just more pessimistic about the good parts as well as the bad parts.

yeah, Prime did have better atmosphere than pretty much every other game imo which is why it's my favorite ever.  once you're done with the game though, there's not much to go back to.  I should do a new run through soon.

When games start to feel like a chore for a long period of time, that is when I usually stop playing them. That's what happened with Last Remnant recently. I liked the game, everything was going swimmingly except for the fucking Jap achievements, and then I get to the 6 bases and discover that I have to grind for god knows how long. I haven't touched it in a few weeks now, and I've started Tales of Vesperia instead.

EmCee, I didn't like Metroid Prime because:
-Game was filled with backtracking, I must've backtracked through that stupid lava area about 30 times during a single course of play
-Control scheme felt counter-intuitive
-Awkwardly positioned fetch quest at the end of the game
-Too much focus on stopping to scan everything for backstory

Not to mention, the whole thing felt soulless... for me, I wasn't playing for fun after a certain point but just to get it out of the way. Absolutely loved the music though, especially the second part of the Phendrana Drifts.

*disclaimer: I'm a 2D, retro-gaming whore who loves the traditional Metroid games.

This was the same as the previous Metroid games. Search the area that's accessible, get new equipment, run back to locked door/inaccessible room, repeat. That's just how it's always been, although Retro toned it down in MP3.

Quote
-Too much focus on stopping to scan everything for backstory

All that's completely optional. Nevermind that previous Metroid games had little to no backstory at all beyond a few paragraphs in the manual and what you could deduce from your surroundings.

I don't really understand what you mean by this, but I thought it had a similar feel to the other Metroid games. You touch down on a deserted world filled with the ruins of previous civilizations and wander through a variety of locals fighting off local wildlife and space pirates.

The great joy in Metroid was taking new abilities and applying them to old areas to either gain access to new areas, weapons, powerups. The speed in which you could do this did not make the game feel like drudgery. You could fly through areas in record time as you gained new abilities and powers. It was a hyperkinetic game.

The reason why people laud the "atmosphere" and graphics of Prime is because they had so much time to think about it as they trudged through section to section. Fuck me, I'm stuck on planet molasses.

It's a half-assed FPS game, it's a half-assed exploration/adventure game with cumbersome controls. The bosses were dull. If it were called "Outpost X29" instead of Metroid, you would have quit playing after the 10th hour of mindfuckingly boring "gameplay".

Good day.

People laud Metroid Prime's atmosphere and graphics because *gasp!* the atmosphere and graphics are/were actually really good! Yes, I know it's a shocking revelation that people would think this, because they should have too busy flying through every level at five thousand miles a second to even notice how well the world's were designed, how much attention to detail there was, and how well the visuals and audio merged to form a cohesive experience. It's quite mind-boggling that some people actually like being immersed in the world of Tallon IV!

Of course, all of this ignores the fact that Metroid Prime speed runs [100% speed runs at that] have clocked in at just over one hour.

And if it was called Outpost X29 I would have beaten it along with Outpost X30 and Outpost X31.

I like how you keep bringing it up as if it's supposed to be a source of shame, when in actuality it's a great fantasy series that far exceeds 90% of all visual medium fantasy from the past decade based almost solely on how good the animation and art style are. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the story is pretty good too. Characters are a bit hit and miss and the dialogue has a habit of parroting the same idea every other episode, but I can forgive that. It's also pretty much the least loli thing featuring kids to come from Japan since Hayao Miyazaki's last movie, meaning no fanservice, no sexualization of underage kids [or anyone else for that matter], and no reliance on referential nerdling humor to carry the show. The worst aspect of the show, by margin as wide as the distance between our galaxy and the next, is the unfortunate, and horrifyingly bad name, which should never have been used by this show or anything else, for that matter.

AND I've been playing Super Metroid for the first time in my life.  Yes its cool to walljump endlessly up the side of a cliff, but unless you have the whole game mapped out mentally shinesparking isn't going to get you beyond two rooms at most.
Super also has a terrible floaty jump, Zero Mission wins in the controls department.

TA, you're argument is great, and I understand that people feel that way about the Metroid Prime games, but I don't think it's fair to assume that everyone should feel that way.  I love the games, as well as the 2D games.  I enjoyed the pace, and I really like the effort put into all the journal entries and details of the environment.

I don't know why you care so much that I like a game.  You guys care so much about how anything Nintendo or Wii-related is such a dirty dirty fucking word that you can't admit that some people don't have such close-minded and selective views on gaming as you do.

The reason that Prime feels like it takes longer to get around probably has to do with the diversity of the rooms.  iirc, most rooms in the 2D series were kinda just copy-pasted platforms and walls so you probably didn't pay attention to the background as much.  Personally, I liked the diversity of the individual rooms and understanding how the story went along by actually scanning specific panels/instruments/enemies or whatever.  It was VERY weird at first scanning and locking on but I got used to it after about an hour so the game is definitely not perfect.  If you are able to make sense of relatively new gameplay ideas, you should be able to get through the majority of the game without any problem imo.

Prime 3 did make a lot of improvements but I think Prime 1 was the best game as far as atmosphere and boss design goes.

On the consoles, I'll play a quick game of Catan, EDF, or Fight Night.
