Kororin0inopa the Second
« on: March 12, 2009, 09:44:20 PM »
Heard good things about the first so decided to pick this up.  Was a bitch to find.  Apparently it wasn't even in gamestop's system or some bullcrap like that.  Toysrus and Target didn't have it.  But then I found it at Best Buy.  Its really cool because they have a large games section with lots of stuff that's usually hard to find.
:bow Best Buy

Apparently Marble rolling games need narrative so an ant named ...Anthony...wants you to roll a marble around to collect parts for a road.  Building the road leads to a sunflower seed.  WHATEVER.

Game supports both vertical and horizontal wiimote orientations.  Also has a separate balance board mode but I can't find wiifit anywhere so that'll have to wait.
The ball moves slow, I can't compare to the original but it can feel kind of sluggish.  Maintaining momentum becomes an important aspect yadda yadda.  Its kind of weird having to navigate with the wiimote on its side as the courses do use different interconnected planes yet you can't default to the original horizontal position during these. Awkward.
Need to check out the wifi stuff now.

End of fragmented thoughts.

I didn't get the first one because I think it was pretty short, but I like marble-madness type things.

Does this seem very long?

I believe Hudson said 150 stages.  Theres also 30 balance board stages but I don't know if thats included in the 150.  There is a create a stage feature let me check the manual.

Hmm, that seems pretty decent.  Hopefully some info comes on a PAL release soon and we get it for a good price.

Skimming the internet quotes Hudson at 150+ stages.  I think the original only had 40.  Seems to support dlc and online leaderboards as well.

the original was great, and about 3-4 hours long, but still pretty dang decent.  It had really good music, of which I'm hoping the sequel possesses as well.

a sequel that's not so content challenged could be the best tilt rolling game on the Wii.  I will likely be contributing to this thread with my own impressions once I buy this, but its gonna have to wait a few months, as school and Broken Sword are going to take precedence.

You're doing it wrong.  Why do you think certain balls have a low bounce stat?  So when you jump across the level the ball doesn't rebound into oblivion.  It only lets you go so much distance however.  Best to do a low trajectory if you can manage.

Game is a real charmer so far, this is what monkey ball wii could've been.

I hope they actually ship enough this time.  The original is like the rarest Wii game to the point that I could never find it at less than $50-60 and I wasn't paying that much.

I checked my Best Buy and they didn't have #2, so I'm thinking about just ordering it off Amazon so I don't miss the boat again.  I have a feeling this will be impossible to find in 3 weeks and be $50 on ebay.

This game reminds me sooooo much of Mario Galaxy.  From the perfect presentation to how it eases you into new gimmicks.  I think it even has normal mapping!  Controls are the best use of motion on the wii and the music fits so perfectly.   Just :].  I'm putting aside madworld so I can appreciate this more.  Just wish newer marbles would unlock faster.

If this keeps up and does indeed have the 150+ stages this could be GOTY if Excitebots doesn't rock my face off.

THE CONTROLS/PHYSICS ARE HORRIBLE (STIFF STIFF STIFF)
THE CAMERA IS HORRIBLE

Why do I always have terrible luck.  I could have used the $30 towards the $60 that the original goes for on ebay. ;_;

I hope you played for more than half an hour.
I got used to it pretty fast.  Its really about learning the course layout and preserving momentum.  Its not realistic but I like that leveling the field stops the ball quickly.  Makes the game easier to tackle.

edit:  example- I can beat level 1-10 on time attack in 0:02 seconds. Awesome

My problem is that there IS NO MOMENTUM.  You are either standing still or moving really fast.  I want the physics to control like Monkey Ball :(

The first Monkey Ball is the best ball rolling game ever.  It's probable that no game will beat it ever.  The 2nd one is less good but still amazing.  There's not much luck involved, it really is skill/timing based and there are multiple ways to beat a lot of stages.

Anyhow, I'm on world 3 now and I'm sort of getting used to the controls but they still feel off when you vertical or upside or whatever.  The camera is pretty bad though.  I wish I could rotate it with the d-pad.  When you're rolling toward the screen and you have no idea what is ahead it's kind of bullshit.  Also I don't get the cannons AT ALL.  I die so many times because of them.

I agree on your points. Camera fucks me up more than the controls.  My trick with the cannons is to ignore the arrow and just tilt slightly in the direction you want the ball to go.

Cool.  To get gold trophies do you just have to beat a certain time?  Or do you have to beat the time + having got all optional items in the stage?

You don't have to get optional stuff.  Green gems and stump temple parts never earn you new marbles.  Trophies are only based on total time.  To be honest I'm not sure if gold is needed.  Its just that I wasn't unlocking new marbles until I started time attacking the earlier stages. I got all gold and one silver and still got the rugby ball, so I don't know the exact requirements.

I did the first 2-3 worlds all golds/platinums on easy and was enjoying the game more.  Easy mode was pretty fun because you can make large movements and go fast to get the best times.  In fact, I got so used to going fast and controlling the starting marble, when I got the Rugby ball I just stuck with the starting marble.  Then world 4 had some level with a really stupid canon part that took me 50 tries and 10 mins of JUMP IN CANNON AND FLY THE WRONG WAY.  When you have to land on little platforms with not much leeway the cannons really ruin the game for me.  They are so sensitive and I can't hold the remote 100% perfectly in the direction I should be.

Then I finished up world 4 and before going to world 5 it said I had to get parts.  I did the city extra stages, which were ok.  But then I got to the candy extra stages and it was just annoying so I turned it off and am shelving the game permanently.  The weird sideways/upside-down whole 3d movement just feels unintuitive and I can never move in a STRAIGHT LINE horizontally or vertically when the control is sideways or upsidedown.  Between the 3d movement and the cannons it's just not fun for me anymore.

If I had one wish granted for the marble rolling genre, it would be an option to use the nunchuck analogue in all future rolling games.  I get that people like the "tilt" idea because it's more like those real life marble rolling puzzles, but it's just less accurate than an analogue and makes the games harder and more luck/wacky physics based than the olden marble rolling games.  I mean Monkey Ball on GC analogue controlled PERFECT, yet they bring MB to Wii and add tilt and it controls horribly and the game sucks.  Then they bring Monkey Ball to the iphone with tilt and the game controls horribly and sucks.  If you want to keep making tilt rolling games, then fine but give an option to just use a damn analogue for those who don't enjoy tilt.

All my favorite Wii games are 90%+ analogue based.  I have a lot of dislike for tilt, pointer, or gesture based titles because of control problems in many of them.

If you don't like ir/waggle then why do you have a wii.

Upside down?  There is no level in this game that requires that.  The controls stop working almost when upside down.  And I can do the cannons about 3/4 of the time now.  Had to get an instinct for their trajectory.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/964/964286p1.html

Quote
"Gathering these secret crystals should be a challenge since there are real rewards, but here is where some of the control issues with Marble Saga truly interfere with the game. Holding the Wii Remote flat does indeed level out the maze, but to really manipulate the marbles through tight situations or recover from tricky traps, you will twist your wrist all over the place -- including upside-down. At times, there is a real disconnect between the position of your hand and the tilt of the maze. The camera also works against you in many situations, as the direction you want to roll your marble does not exactly translate to the position of the labyrinth on-screen."

I know there were a few places already where I was upside-down.  The IGN review is pretty much how I feel about the game.

And I have a Wii because I like good games and some of them end up on Wii.  My favorite Wii games (Mario Galaxy, No More Heroes, Madworld, Tatsunoko v. Capcom, etc...) all play like normal PS2 games with the occasional motion gesture.  The IR/Waggle games are usually too sensitive and 20% of the time it'll read the input incorrectly and you die.  It's like an entire system of Lair, and I don't dig that.

I don't think there is a vertical one.  There's holding it straight but one handed with the length out and then horizontal with two hands.  I tried both and ended up doing the 1 handed control scheme.
