According to the article, which was published today, Pope Benedict hasn't really discussed the issue until now. But you're right: it's a continuation of the Catholic Church's policy on condoms. If old, secluded celibate priests aren't experts in sex, then who is?

catholic church is FAR more modern than the protestant church, that is not even a arguable fact. Look at their comparable stances on science and the literal stances of the bible.

Basically all of Christianity is fucking crazy for the most part (as shown with this evil fucker of a pope), but I'd put the catholic church a step above most protestant ones because they at least accept evolution and treat a decent amount of the old testament as metaphor unlike protestants who ignore science and take the bible word for word.

PD's little bait was purely because he was raised a good protestant boy who went to bible camp and thus still has some odd need to defend it.

The Church of England a mainstream 'Protestant Church' is far more liberal than the Catholic Church. Gay priests, women priests, belief in evolution etc.
Catholicism has many faces. You have conservatives that are in power now since most of their congregation that laps it up. I don't even think Jesuits are real Catholics, just Malek types who gave up trying to get laid and started planning world domination.

I'd take the Catholic Church over bumpkin Evalengical Churchs I see in the rural and south US I see any dayof the week though.

I go to an extremely progressive, environmentally focused, pro-Gay marriage, liberal ELCA Lutheran church in Seattle.

I've known a lot of Lutherans and went to a Lutheran high school, they tend to be the anti-evolution, 7 day creation crowd. A biiig shift towards literal biblical stuff compared to the catholic schools I've been to. You stumbled upon a rarity. Probably because you live in Seattle lol.

Missouri Synod or ELCA? ELCA is typically more progressive and forward thinking. I'm not super religious or anything, but it's important to my wife and we found a kick ass church in our kick ass city.

Lutherans vary from pretty tame to outright progressive, in my experience. They are also generally usually pretty tolerant.

you want to throw your hate on a particular denomiation, you should focus either on Southern Baptists-who have money, enormous political clout, and intolerance in spades , or the increasingly "non-denominational" fringe churches that made those everything else out there, no matter how nutball, look tame and reasonable in comparison.

I live in a mixed Catholic/Jewish area and nearly everyone I know who is Catholic is pretty progressive with respect to gay rights, evolution, etc. though I have a feeling that most of the Catholics are of the lapsed/"Cathnostic" variety like myself.
