I've been tasked to get more out of our servers. I'm using VMware ESXi because it's free and even though the license is only free for a single processor we have 2 units with quad cores and 16GB RAM each so they are perfect candidates for me. I have a couple questions and statements I would like to be corrected on if I'm wrong.
1. Anyone know the memory footprint of the VMWare OS? Can I allocate all the memory to the VMs or should I leave some for the OS? If so , recommendations please.
2. Anyone know a VMWare to Virtual Server converter program that isn't a piece of shit like MS's VSMT offering. What a wild goose chase it is trying to install the thing and all these other things that need to be installed first. The VMWare converter works like a charm and is also free, but I'd like to go both ways(VM to VS and VS to VM) conversion wise so I'm ready for which ever way I'm told to go based on performance evaluations.
3.I know Virtual Server and Hyper-V pretty well. Hyper-V comes standard with 2008 Server which is nice, but what you have to go through to even get the mouse to work in a Hyper-V VS is very frustrating and ridiculous to even have to do.
4. The VMWare converter easily creates a quick virtual machine from a physical one which is great. Is there a way to do the same for a virtual server other than a ghost image? I haven't looked to far down that hole yet so any recommendations would be great.
Anything else I should know about in the world of virtualization would also be great.
