Sylvia Plath's son . . .

commits suicide

Quote
The son of the poets Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath has taken his own life, 46 years after his mother gassed herself while he slept.

Nicholas Hughes hanged himself at his home in Alaska after battling against depression for some time, his sister Frieda said yesterday.

He was 47, unmarried with no children of his own and had until recently been a professor of fisheries and ocean sciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Dr Hughes’s death adds a further tragic chapter to a family history that has been raked over with morbid fascination for two generations.

His suicide is not surprising: (1) mental illness tends to run in families and (2) anyone would contemplate committing suicide if they had to live in Alaska.

i hate her as well but now that i know her husband did a lot of posthumous tinkering, i'm curious how much of my dislike is misdirected.

I'm just surprised that Sylvia Plath had a kid.

Maybe I'm just an uneducated plebe, but should I know this Ted Hughes character? It says he's a poet, but is that in the same way that this guy I'm friends with on Facebook is a "poet" because he has emotions and sometimes writes short prose about those emotions?

If I recall correctly, The Iron Giant is based on a book he wrote, among dozens(?) of books he wrote. He was also British Poet Laureate for a couple of decades. In other words, I think he's a little more deserving of the characterization "poet" than you facebook friend.

Thanks for the knowledge. Once you got to poet laureate, I knew I was a fool.

Though, in fairness, this friend of mine is a published author. And I think he's probably watched The Iron Giant.

This isn't too surprising.

Lots of Hemingway's family members have committed suicide as well. Like you said, it tends to run in families.

It's probably good that I don't; mental illness seems to run in my family as well.

Suicide is actually a huge problem in Alaska, especially in the interior.  What with the rampant substance abuse and long periods of darkness, it a depressives perfect storm.

A number of my cousins are agnostics or atheists.
I was, of course, referring to family members who have suffered from actual mental illnesses and who have killed themselves.
