nutraloaf: a violation of due process

http://www.mahalo.com/Nutraloaf

Quote
Nutraloaf is a food loaf served as punishment to unruly prisoners in many United States prisons. The Nutraloaf recipe varies widely, but often includes potato flakes, imitation cheese, beans, ground beef, cubed bread, and other foods. Because eating it does not require utensils, it is considered an ideal food to serve to prisoners who have attempted to use forks or spoons to unlock their cell or stab other inmates or guards.

Currently inmates in Vermont are suing over the use of Nutraloaf as punishment. Vermont law does not allow for a change in diet to be used as punishment for bad behavior. The Vermont Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case March 24, 2008. This is only the most recent of a number of lawsuits brought by prisoners protesting the use of Nutraloaf as punishment.

Many of the prisoners who are fed Nutraloaf have assaulted guards and thrown their feces. Several states have banned the practice, while others require the guards to follow a set of disciplinary procedures before Nutraloaf is given.

apparently samuel lemaire considered it cruel and unusual punishment in lemaire v. maass (http://www.altlaw.org/v1/cases/455474)

Quote
1. The use of Nutraloaf for up to seven days as a sanction for misbehavior violates the Eighth Amendment. Moreover, the use of Nutraloaf "for misconduct not directly related to the misuse of food or utensils, and which cannot be curbed by the use of Nutraloaf, is a due process violation."

tvc, we need to bribe maf to try this shit and report back.

So basically if they serve nutraloaf to everybody then no one can complain. Sounds like we have our solution.

wow, can it really be that bad?  I imagine the feces that gets thrown around as a result of eating nutraloaf is rock fucking hard, and could probably be widdled in to a shank.

how is this so bad? i used to make my brother eat/drink far worse when i was 10. i think i filled a blender with bread, mayo, old swiss steak, beef gravy, toothpaste, rock salt, milk, and like ten zillion different spices and made him drink almost the whole thing -- and he survived! (sorta.)

Oh noes, jail is hard.   ::)

Pity prisoners be inconvenienced with hardships considering what they did to other people to get themselves where they are.

There is a reason we keep animals in cages.

I'll do a wine pairing.  I know just who to ask for recommendations.

Some toilet wine?  Mmm...

Yeah, I can see the topic of nutraloaf showing up on the next borecast.
