Persona 3: whoa
« on: March 24, 2009, 03:17:25 AM »
so finally started this game after having it sit there for a few months. Ive been home sick from work (temperature  :() so decided to 'stick it in'

Is this the best PS2 rpg? Seems like it just from the first couple hours, tons of depth, good characters and amazing music and presentation.

First question: how do you equip other characters? I tried talking to them outside tartarus but the weapon I bought wasnt showing up in their list, I couldnt figure out if you had to hand it them or something?

Actually that would be Persona 4, but 3 is pretty close too.

P4 is the tbetter game but I liked P3 more. Prolly cuz the fresh and new feel. If I hadn't played p3 a year before P4 I'd definitely like P4 more but by the time it came out it felt been here, done that.

So, I'm not a big RPG guy, but I've heard of things like Persona and Digital Devil Saga, Devil Summoner, and those sorts of things. Now, those are all made by the same company, yeah?

Anyway, you all are talking up Persona 3 and 4 pretty well, and in the back of my mind I figured I'd play the DDS games somewhere down the line, having heard they were pretty good.

So, my questions are: which series is better (whatever that means to you), and which games take the least amount of time to complete?

And, if the latter is a ridiculous question in the context of those particular games, then say that and I'll know that they just aren't for me.

all made by atlus ya, atlus usa translated them

digital devil saga is more traditional rpg wise and probably best. the cutscenes are kinda cheesy but the games are really fun. id say they take 60+hours each, persona 3 is 70+hours at least, my save is 90+ not counting the FES expansion which is about 30 more hours , persona 4 is much shorter. havent played devil summoner

these rpgs will destroy what precious free time you have

What I think is more likely is that I'll sit down, be excited about playing, get through those early tutorial-ish hours, and then right around the time you start to head out and get things done, I'll say "well fuck this, I don't have time for this mess."

I still own the game and this pretty much sums it up. It never felt like I was accomplishing anything during the hours that I spent in tartarus. I have hung onto it for a reason though, and I hope to play through the game eventually. Just hafta find the time

DDS takes around 30 hours to complete, but thats basically half a game. (with the orther half being DDS 2), so it's more like 60 hours.
Also i'd rate the series \ games Nocturne > DDS > Persona > Devil summoner.

Well, if it keeps it from being 50+ hours long, I mean, I'll give it a shot.

Anyways, so basically you all are telling me Digital Devil Saga is the way to go. So, I'll probably check that out when I run out of games to play that have been released for a current gen console (or Wii) in the past two years.

I've been interested in picking these Persona games up.  My RPG fix has been gettin' filled latelywith the DS Dragon Quests, but I want MOAR.  I'm completely tossing FFXII out of the mix, because I've tried to play it five times and I always end up quitting around the time you leave Rabanastre.

So, these games are hot shit then?  Should I play these last two Persona games, or, like, the SMT games?  I don't know much about the series or developer or whatever.

I'd recommend starting with Persona 4. From there, you can move on to DDS1+2, after which if you're still feeling it there's Persona 3 or Nocturne.

I keep seeing people talking about playing Persona 4 before Persona 3, and it confuses me. So, they aren't direct sequels then? Or is P4 just so vastly superior that it's worth playing out of order?

Also, and I could totally look this up but what the hell, are their Persona and Persona 2 games as well? Haven't seen them mentioned, and I figure with JRPGs there would be at least one fanboy that would roll into this thread and be all like "OMG PERSONA IZ BEST ALSO PERZONA 2." And so forth.

P1+2 are PS1 era and of a type. P3+4 are PS2 and of a type.

4 is much better than 3, in that Blizzard expansion pack sort of way - dozens of small tweaks that add up to an amazingly better game. 3 is still very good, though.

The plots are not related, though there's some minor P3 fanservice in P4. MINOR - like 15 minutes of an 80 hour game.

Not that I inherently have a problem with long games, but I see anything over 20 hours and I think "I'll never have time to finish this."

I think it'd be more correct to say that you'd have to like games that play themselves to enjoy FFXII.

Ironic statement in a thread about Persona 3.  At least in FF XII you could give direct orders to your team mates.  I can't count the number of times I said out loud "Why the fuck would you DO that?!" during Persona 3 when one of my team mates would do the least helpful thing imaginable.  The AI was considerably improved in Persona 4.  But as far as games that play themselves, FF XII did a better job.  And the whole game over when you protagonist dies in battle is lame.  Hopefully that goes away in Persona 5.

I just finished Persona 3 FES The Answer today.  What a ride!  My save file for The Journey clocked just over 90 hours and I put just under 30 hours into The Answer.  This recession has been great for my gaming habit.  Being out of work, I've beaten Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Persona 4, and Persona 3 FES... all in the span of a few months.  Persona 3 is more epic than Persona 4, but I had a better time with Persona 4.  I'm now about 5 hours into DDS 1 and loving it so far.  I have DDS 2 on the shelf waiting.

Main character dying resulting in a game over is SMT.

If they take away that the games will become even more nerfed.

FFXII's boring. P3 was so addicting I played it like constantly for a month. I didn't get the same feeling when I played FFXII.

The difference between P3 and FFXII is that P3 is like all the other dozens and dozens of rpgs with AI settings, which have been there for years. FFXII, however, turned ai into its main battle system feature. That's stupid.

The original Persona game didn't give you a game over if a particular character died and I don't believe DDS does that either... it's not a SMT thing.

I think the big problem with FFXII's AI system was mainly the user interface.  It was just cumbersome to set up the AI and not all AI options were available to you at the beginning of the game.  I'm one of the few folks on here who actually enjoyed FFXII, but I wish they'd just given me all the gambits (or whatever they're called) at the beginning of the game.

About 15 hours in now..... really loving it. Havent had to resort to a guide or anything yet, smooth sailing with no cheap deaths. I love RPGs with bosses which require strategy, not just griniding

Just bought Persona 4 (with free soundtrack CD!) for afterwards, and Yggdra Union for PSP, so I can continue to suck the Atlus dick and embrace my inner j-homo

I finally got my PS2 hooked back up last week and warmed it back up with some Persona 3. I think in about 3 or 4 days I've played it about 11 hours and I'm already up to June 6th.

Academics takes FOREVER to level up.  :'(

I'm at the same date, but with almost 18 hours on the clock.  I guess I fuck around in Tartarus more.

I think I'm actually getting the hang of the game though.  It's really not a game you can just bruteforce your way through, you really 100% have to consider weaknesses, which is pretty new for me.

I hate, hate, hate Tartarus. I'd rather spend my time wooing the ladies and getting my Academics, Courage, and Charm maxed out!

Right now I'm around Tartarus level 50-52, character level 20 or 21, and I've almost got my Charm maxed out at the end of June. I think my time is around 17 hours now; I've really been blowing through this game today.
