EA is set to reveal a brand new entry in Bullfrog's cult classic Syndicate series, CVG has been told.

Cast your mind back to when Starbreeze struck that deal with EA to resurrect one of the publisher's "classic franchises" and Syndicate was hotly tipped. Starbreeze definitely sounds like a good fit for the gritty cyberpunk universe as well.

No more details were offered by our secret agent, but to see a current-gen remake of the PC and PSOne RTS - which still has a cherished place in many a veteran gamer's heart - would no doubt please many.

In case you're wondering what we're on about, the original Syndicate was released in 1993 and later followed up in 1996 by Syndicate Wars.

The game put players in charge of a militant global corporation, and tasked them with leading cyborg agents around a gritty cyberpunk world rescuing captured allies and assassinating rival syndicate executives. It was awesome.

We'll let you know if our deepthroats are on the money. In the meantime, which genre would you like to see a modern day Syndicate sliced into?

Please be true! :omg

nevermind this is old :(

totally overrated series, though it does have some pretty original themes. Might be decent.

And the game 2K Boston's ex-bioshock guy Ken Levine may-or-may-not be working on is X-Com. Either we're about to see a resurgence in team-based set-resource management/strategy games, or the corpses of some great games are about to be pillaged and turned into FPS or Kart Racers.

Bite your tongue. The first Syndicate is awesome. One of the games that instilled in me a lifelong passion for PC Gaming. Syndicate was the kind of game that Nintendon't.

I would be happier if it wasn't Starbreeze, lol.

Then again, people said the same thing about Bethseda and Fallout, yet supposedly that turned out better than anyone expected.

I see no confirmation in that article, just "sources" - granted, these things tend to be more true than false

I think it's a good fit even if Starbreeze isn't really the best dev out there.  They are good at creating the type of atmosphere needed in a cyberpunk game, so that's a plus.

Swaggaz, did you ever finish Dark Athena?  How did that turn part of the package turn out?  Better or worse than The Darkness?

It wasn't bad.  I mean, it's not as good as Butcher Bay, but it was enjoyable enough for me.  I liked it more than The Darkness.  The main problem with the game is that they made it a bit too much of a shooter at times, especially in the last half of the game.  Like, if you played Resistance Retribution and noticed how one of those explosive shooting giants came out after every minor battle, it's basically the same situation as that; the last parts of the game are going through mostly straight forward levels shooting drones, turrets and then facing off against a giant enemy.  The first half is better and is most like the mine section of Butcher Bay; very little interaction with friendly NPC and going around a semi-open area finding things.

They better no screw it up and make it a FPS (I'm looking at you Shadowrun). I think it's in good hands at EA, though. Their resurrection of the Command & Conquer series was great. I loved Syndicate Wars on the PS1.

Starbreeze has had to move up from the garage CG demo scene to full-on developer pretty rapidly, and they've been handed some sizeable properties. I imagine the pressure has been overwhelming at times.

I'll end up getting Athena just to play the Butcher Bay game. I've owned that on PC since the Director's Edition was launched, but never installed it because I'm always in front of my 360.
