When I was using my laptop Thursday night, everything turned pink and white, shook for a bit, then the screen turned black and stayed that way until I turned it off. I turned it back on the next morning and it worked alright for a few hours, but the same thing happened again. Now it won't even get past the login screen before it has a seizure and freezes up again. :'(

So is this a GPU problem like I suspect (I have the 8400M)? My laptop is still under the year warranty for like 2-3 more weeks so I should be able to call up HP to get it fixed. Only problem is that I didn't have anything backed up and I'm guessing that they're gonna wipe my HD. :(

Fuck, so what do you they'll do when I send it back? Will they replace it with a newer GPU? :hyper

What's the deal with Nvidia's mobile GPUS?  I too have overheating problems with the 9800M GTS in my Gateway laptop.  It works fine in non-gaming situations but it will shut down quickly whenever a graphically demanding game is being played.

Is there some way to modify the cooling for a laptop GPU?  I haven't bothered to get my laptop fixed 'cause I have a feeling it's an inherent NV problem.  The tech supports guys will probably miss the problem anyway since they won't be testing GPU intensive games on it.

I don't know what series it was but my sister's HP Pavillion had the same black screen//beeping/gpu problem which happened quite a lot till it finally died.

warranty expired so i sold it for her and bought Acer laptop and so far no problems.

it's pretty weird though, she's no gamer so i dunno why would it fucking overheat like that, is MS word and browsing really that tough for laptops nowadays.

Someone at GAF recommended that I get this so that I can back up my HD. Is it worth it or is there something cheaper that's just as good?

heat kills notebooks, if she was using it laying on the bed, or covering up the cooling vents while it was in her lap, that will surely kill a notebook quicker than almost anything (other than dropping it, that is)

always use a notebook on a flat surface, and also elevate it for air circulation if possible

the 9X00M mobile gpus don't have the heat/instability/6-12 month lifespan issues of the 8X00M series. SG, you probably just got a bum one.
