It was all a virtual reality simulation that a group of astronauts in 2035 were using to kill time while they traveled to literally find "life on mars"

You still should. Almost everything prior to this is really good and Jason O Mara is great as a lead.

Honestly, I'm convinced the creators just said "fuck it" and gave us this ending as a joke when they found out it was canceled and the last ep was airing on April Fools. Nothing else explains it.

I gotta finish the UK version. Only 2 eps in.

They aren't enough keys on the keyboard to express the faces I was making during the ending.

Might want to spoilornates that.

But erm why? Americans can't handle that subject?

I think it's the same reason why more Euro-movies have bad endings.
I guess the average American demands happy endings.

Even our comedies have bad endings (blackadder , the young ones...)

Emo europe!

You know, I was going to dispute this but the only brit show I can think of that I enjoyed the ending to was The Office.  The best shows were things that didn't have a narrative, like Monty Python, or stuff that just doesn't end like Dr. Who.

I can understand wanting to poison your own well as a fuck you, but the IP isn't the American team's well to poison. Pretty fucking lame on their part, now I'm going to have to defend liking TOS to people that have never (and probably never will now) watch it.

At the end of the series it is revealed that Tyler's 2008 & 1973 realities were both fictitious, created by the futuristic computer - named Windy - aboard a space ship that is carrying Tyler, Hunt, Norris, Carling and Skelton on the first ever manned mission to the planet Mars. Tyler's actual reality is the year 2035, and the crew he worked with in the past are just virtual reality versions of his fellow spaceship crewmembers. The reason why he had travelled back to 1973 was due to a temporary malfunction on board the ship: to sustain their lives, all of the crew were routinely kept active while asleep using virtual reality "neural stimulation" programs of their own choosing, but a meteor storm caused a momentary glitch in the program (Sam had chosen his 2008 identity as part of his VR program, but the program accidentally kicked him back to 1973). Frank Morgan is the Mission Control flight director, Annie Norris is the Colonel in charge of the mission, and Gene Hunt - "Major Tom" - is also revealed to be Sam's father.

This is what I expected:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Sam chooses not to answer the phone the last time.  He knows it's just going to keep ringing at random times, but he'll just have to live with it.  There are some cryptic statements made by Gene Hunt about enjoying what you have while you have it because nothing lasts forever, etc.  Flash to Sam circa 2014, hospital/care facility bed, coma. His eyes open.  He looks aware, and a little sad, but the viewer is left with the knowledge that he had five good years where he was. The phone in his room begins to ring.

The british life on mars had a fantastic ending :(. And the american show was really good other than this. Fuck, LIFE ON MARS was the name because it was a 70's era bowie song, thats it!  Not cause its a show about GOING TO MARS. Uuuugh.
