those types of conversations are hell. i can never think of anything better to say than "i'm so sorry," and i always worry that they won't think i'm being sincere. i mean, you can't say something to cheer them up and you don't really want to keep talking specifically about it for fear of pushing too much, so you just end up sitting there awkwardly, hoping that they'll just start pouring their heart out and then say "thanks for listening" so you can feel like you actually did help them somehow. i would also imagine it would be much, much harder to console someone over im compared to real life.

One of my slightly older cousins (like maybe 5-8 years older than me) was trying to conceive with his wife for like a half decade. For whatever reason, they couldn't get pregnant. I think I recall my mom saying they caught something on a (later) genetic screening that showed some basic incompatibility that made pregnancy unlikely. It's a shame, because they are like the nicest most considerate people in the world, and of all the young people I've known, they best deserve to be parents.

So, he eventually did get his wife pregnant. I don't know whether it was luck of the draw or whether they did something magic-y or sciencey or what, but it was good--they wanted a kid for a long time and it was finally happening. Nine months later and. . .

. . .the kid was born with like 3/4ths of a heart and a fraction of a liver. It died in like three months and my cousin and his wife became creepy christians. Now we don't talk to them anymore.

I find this really hard too. Some people are grief vultures and swoop into a bad scene and almost revel in it. I get really self-concious about trying not to do that, but probably over-compensate.
