Drag Me To Hell - yay or nay?
« on: April 02, 2009, 03:16:07 PM »
This is Sam Raimi's return to horror.....it is supposed to be somewhere in between Evil Dead 1 and Evil Dead 2 in terms of tone.  I hope it leans more on the scary/chilling/creepy side of ED1 and less on the stupid/slapstick/splatter side of ED2.

A young bank loan officer decides to foreclose on an old gypsy woman's home (how topical!).  Gypsy woman puts curse on loan officer.  Nasty things happen.

FlameOfCallandor hated it.

I had a few trusted friends that saw it and they were thoroughly entertained - said it was very campy, though.  One felt it was a solid B-movie, something Raimi hasn't done in awhile - kind of dusting the rust off an old bicycle, as he said.

Looking forward to it.  Expecting a fun, campy movie.

I saw it a few weeks ago during SXSW. It's not as bad as spider-man 3 but it has shades of it.

It's not very campy, it doesn't have anyone near the level of Bruce Campbell and most of the jokes are distinguished mentally-challenged. The story is predictable and holds your hand the whole way through.

I'm going to trust my friends on this one and the fact that the trailer has the line, "Soon, it will be YOU who comes begging to ME!" in terms of camp value on this one.

I'm not expecting Evil Dead 2 slapstick, but I am expecting lots of camp.

Eh, I trust my buddies.  Plus, the worst review out of the SXSW screening was that it was a pretty awful horror film, but a great comedy.

No, but I've seen Horne and Corden's tv sketch show here in the UK and it was terrible. If their shit passes for comedy these days, I'm afraid the genre has a very bleak future.

Plus, enough people I know have seen the film for me to gauge whether I would like it or not. And frankly, all of them hated it.

They got recognition from mediocre tv series Gavin and Stacy, and now they blew their big chance to make a name for themselves overseas with LVK. Well done boys, you've done us proud.

I don't I'll ever watch LVK. I hate Horne and Corden.

Well, if you want to watch a decent contemporary british series, there's this one called 'The Inbetweeners' on E4. Series 2 is about to get under way here. The first series is 6 parts.

Basically it's like Skins, but for nerds. It tells the story of group of young friends who are not quite goggle-eyed nerds or neither the 'cool' kids. Hence the show title.

This first episode features two of school's most exciting events: a field trip and the arrival of a new girl. The geography trip to Swanage does nothing to enthuse the lads; the opposite is true of shiny new student Lauren. Will takes an immediate shine to her but it turns out she only has eyes for Simon. Such is life. Pervy jokes and pervier teachers mean that after watching this you'll be laughing - and longing for that crush from class 2B.

The fall of Lucas was pretty clear in ROTJ already I think. I know it has a lot of nostalgia for people but the near endless stream of Muppets in the first half (and then the ewoks) showed the cgi creature obsessed guy he was of the prequels.

apparently the writers' have been asked to write a US adaptation. From wikipedia:

Quote
Iain Morris and Damon Beesley[11] have been asked by American Broadcasting Corporation to produce a pilot for a U.S. version of the series. They will be head writers for the project. The network has given Morris and Beesley a second blind script commitment for a future project the two will create. Both projects will be made at ABC Studios.

Its likely that they would continue the UK version though, as viewer ratings have doubled for series 2. Which is quite amazing for what started as an indie project.

it opened here (UK) on wednesday and I saw it.

It was an enjoyable romp with some pretty hilarious moments. Less scary than Evil Dead, but in keeping with the same tradition of dynamic thrills and frights.

Definately vintage Raimi.

The only thing that felt a bit 'off' was the tinny script. Once you saw the prologue, the story kinda wrote itself and the plot twist is hilariously obvious.

Kinda makes you miss a young Bruce Campbell, though.

I had a great time seeing this and I am very "Raimi-fan burned by Raimi over the Spiderman franchise" person.

It's not as funny as Evil Dead 2/3 and not as good as Evil Dead 1-3, but it's still a whole lot of fun.  The girl is no Campbell but she does a great job with the role.  The scares, the art design and the music were all great.  The special effects were a big jump up from the Evil Dead movies and really the film does feel like the natural progression Sam Raimi would've gone to with the Evil Dead series if Spiderman hadn't come along and he just magically got a higher budget.

The only problem I have with the film is there are LOTS of short slow paced scenes throughout.  So the pacing is like FUN FUN FUN LULL FUN FUN LULL FUN FUN FUN LULL instead of being just pure fun throughout.

But still very much worth a full price movie ticket.  Not as good as Star Trek, but not that much worse.
