Recommend me some good comic TPBs.

I'm mainly looking for some good stand-alone stuff that I don't have to read 15 volumes of or be immersed in 40 years of mythology to appreciate. It can be capes, indie, or whatever as long as it's good and in-print. I'm about to order Scud: Disposable Assassin - The Whole Shebang from Amazon, and I may as well add something else to the cart and get free shipping.

Civil war is contrived melodrama even by the standards of comics.

The Walking Dead! I've been meaning to buy the actual books but haven't gotten around to it. It comes in single issues, volumes of 5 issues, or books of 12 issues. I think they're up to 50 issues or so now and I stopped reading them around issue 30 or so but it was great from what I read.

ZOMBIES! DRAMA! SUSPENSE! HUMANITY TRYING TO COPE AFTER A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE!

american flagg
the blue beetle (new one)
captain america
boom! studios call of cthulhu (serious)
girls (by luna brothers)
the sword (by luna brothers)
l

and i had a friend ask me for some.  he'd never read a comic in his life, i suggested these

Scott Pilgrim - series of 5 books, each $10. A directionless 24 year old has to fight his current girlfriend's exes. and he's in a band. soon to be a movie. funny and fun.

fun home - alison belchel's autobiographical story of her coming to terms with her dad's homosexuality and her own.

persepolis - autobiographical tale of growing up in iran during the revolution and iraq war (theirs not ours)

the umbrella academy - the writer of my chemical romance writes something which doesn't suck and is absolutely bonkers. Gerard Way, of My Chemical Romance, makes his comics writing debut in this outrageous superhero epic that Grant Morrison called "An ultraviolet psychedelic sherbet bomb of wit and ideas. The superheroes of the 21st century are here at last..." In an inexplicable, worldwide event, forty-seven extraordinary children were spontaneously born by women who'd previously shown no signs of pregnancy. Millionaire inventor Reginald Hargreeves adopted seven of the children; when asked why, his only explanation was, "To save the world." These seven children form The Umbrella Academy, a dysfunctional family of superheroes with bizarre powers. Their first adventure at the age of ten pits them against an erratic and deadly Eiffel Tower, piloted by the fearsome zombie-robot Gustave Eiffel. Nearly a decade later, the team disbands, but when Hargreeves unexpectedly dies, these disgruntled siblings reunite just in time to save the world once again

The Pirates Of Coney Island / Teenagers from Mars These are buy Rob G who is from Richmond. Pirates of Coney Island is a strange tale of a runaway boy who joins a gang to fight a girl gang while being hunted down by Cadillacula, the vampire car. Teenagers from Mars is about being a directionless kid in Richmond.

I assume that list is sarcastic since he recommended TDKSA. :lol
Anyway i recommend these.
All-Star Superman Vol 1 & 2
Batman : The Long Halloween
Ghost World
Arkham Asylum
MAUS
League of extraordinary Gentlemen
From Hell.
All of these are stand-alone storys, and none of the superhero comics require any prior knowledge to enjoy. I'd also recommend vertigo series like transmetropolitain but that might be to expensive to get into

Doubt that.  Wilco is known for his bad taste in everything.

I love a good self-contained book.
I just read Tekkon Kinkreet, it's an enjoyable one volume thing.  Not much different from the movie if you've seen it though.
It's Japanese but not all that much like most of the manga I've been exposed to (I'd read more like it though).  I love the art.

From Hell is great if you haven't read that, also one volume.  The first volume of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is pretty self contained as well and awesome.
(also Watchmen and V :-p)

WE3 is great though I don't like much Morrison.  JLA: Earth 2 was enjoyable as well.

There's much more but I can't think of what right now...  I really dig Joe Sacco's journalism works.  I'd have to go look on my bookshelf for more, but I gotta hit the hay.

(I can't stand Chris Ware stuff personally)
