American Military Bases
« on: April 03, 2009, 11:55:11 AM »
So, depending on various reports, it seems to be generally agreed that there are between 700 and 800 U.S. military bases Worldwide, not including bases in the U.S.

My question to you EB: Should the U.S. close down all of the world wide bases it has or just close down the bases where the host country doesn't want them?

My opinion: close down the bases where we aren't needed (such as those in England, why do the British need us to protect them?) and not wanted. This would save alot of money that could be put to good use in other areas, such as improving the national infrastructure.

I say close them all down.  Think how much money we'd save.  Besides why is it our place to defend these nations, some of which don't like us very much anyway.

I say pull them out and replace them with...

Countries that want us out are probably planning to build nukes to kill us. We should triple our number of bases in countries that don't want them, and extract huge fees from the countries that do want them.

What countries don't want the bases? They provide support and aid to many countries, and I doubt they'd want us to gtfo.

Bases in England are important as well. They ensure that any attack on our allies - no matter how powerful said ally is - will be met with a swift response.

I'm sure a lot of Japanese would love to see the bases go away, due to all the rapes that occur in the towns nearby.

England can build their own bases just as well as we can put ours there.  We could accomplish the same results by simply selling them weapons/technology and let them keep it up.

I agree.  The U.S. spends way too much money on national defense.  We need to cut something, especially in these economic times.

Hmm... I seem to remember a certain republican that talked about closing down most of the bases world wide.

Japan, Cuba, Phillipeans. We already closed down the PI base. Cuba is next on the list. The Marines are too entrenched in Japan to give it up. The navy in japan is welcome, for the most part, they agreed to let us house a nuclear carrier.

Most of the foreign bases allow us to respond to world wide threats in a timely manner.

Projecting a presence made sense during the Cold War, but really, having deep roots in Germany, in the middle of nice and stable Europe, just doesn't make sense anymore.

Either close some of that down, or at the very least, scale them back to where they're basically token forces.
