I'm confirmed that NBC is considering cancelling My Name Is Earl due to low ratings and escalating costs. The 20th Century TV show's producers are resisting the drastically reduced licensing fee they're being offered. So word is that Kevin Reilly could pick up the show, which he originally developed when he was NBC Entertainment prez, for the Fox network, where he is now. Fox's own comedy development is weak, with Boldly Going Nowhere near dead and projects like the derivative Cop House a better fit for Comedy Central. But 20th TV needs a few more years of Earl for additional syndication value. As for NBC, everything is low-rated, even its critical hits like 30 Rock. But I bet if NBC owned the show, it would stay on the air. So maybe the network execs will reconsider if they realize the show may head to a competitor.

The Scientology-Earl connection begins with Earl himself - actor Jason Lee is a Scientologist, as is show creator Greg Garcia and Ethan Suplee who plays Earl's slow-reader brother Randy. So far, so creepy. But there has also been a guest appearance from Juliette Lewis, Suplee's sister-in-law and a practising Scientologist. Also down with the Church is Giovanni Ribisi, who plays recurring character Ralph Mariano. Church membership beats the crap out of having a union card and relevant experience, some might suggest.

I've seen My Name is Earl but it's just not the comedy I would associate as funny, at least coming from Jason Lee.

As far as I know, it doesn't teach scientology at all so I'm okay with the show on that level. I just don't like it, and I think Jason Lee is being wasted on it.

I thought someone had actually made a sitcom about Scientologists, a la Big Love.  I was all set to start watching it.  Thanks for disappointing me.   :maf

But what exactly are its teachings? The Church was the creation of L Ron Hubbard, the American science fiction author, as the religious development of his earlier secular self-help system dianetics. Scientology moulded the pseudo science of dianetics with spiritual concepts such as reincarnation and the idea that a person was an immortal spiritual being called a thetan.

A practice central to Scientology is auditing, where a trained counsellor gets the subject to unburden themselves of past traumatic events (engrams) and, crucially, bad things they have done in their past. The confessions are recorded in preclear (PC) folders and kept permanently by the Church. Although there is an auditor's code which states that the auditor must promise not to use the information gained during the audit for punishment or personal gain, a California judge ruled that "the Church or its minions is fully capable of intimidation or other physical or psychological abuse if it suits their ends. The record is replete with evidence of such abuse." So what, we might wonder, could be in Jason Lee's PC folder? And is this finally PC gone mad?

Then there's the concept of the "overt-motivator sequence". Crudely, this is what happens when a person does something bad then subconsciously causes something bad to happen to themself. It all sounds eerily like "Do bad things and it will come back to haunt you", Earl's karmic mantra. The entire series premise, in fact. So when Earl crosses something off his list of bad acts is he just clearing out his preclear closet? Maybe we're unwittingly witnessing an overt motivator sequence? Ruh-roh!

Yep, I can't wait to see this next week.

Never got into My Name is Earl, despite loving Jason Lee. I've seen an episode or two but it just wasn't that funny.

oh, and the show's terrible anyways (it's like in the same league as Nickelback where you can never EVER find someone who legitimately likes them/the show).

Finding out Jason Lee is a scientologist really ruined things for me.

It's not even that I really care if onscreen performers are into some weirdo cult offscreen, but he in particular seemed like a real dude and his snarky asshole persona that I thought I liked is pretty incompatible with getting gobbled up by a cult.

Despite Kevin Smith's many sins, Lee's line from Chasing Amy "Hey! I always notice that bored look in her eyes!" is one for the ages.

Madonna probably wouldn't look half as freaky if she wasn't so obsessed with fighting aging, there are plenty of women who are around 50 who don't like that bad.

I don't know if you know the stuff they have. It's unbelievable the stuff they are doing. Education...they have free centres all over the place for poor kids. They have the number one drug rehabilitation programme in the entire world (called Narconon). It has a 90-something percent success rate...When you look at the actual facts and not what's conjured in people's minds that's all bullshit to me because I've actually seen stuff first hand."

I've never met an actual Scientologist, and from what I understand they don't introduce you to the really freaky shit until you're sufficiently leveled up, but it'd be weird to follow a religion that refuses to even acknowledge it's core beliefs.
