So, how is this laptop?

Putting aside how fucking retardedly ugly it looks, are the specs on this thing any good for gaming? My 3 yr old toshiba (with a 7900 GS) is on it's last legs and I need something soon.

The 9800 GS is a top of the line notebook card right now, right? (can it run things like Crysis?)

I think Eel stated he's playing Left 4 Dead at a good Res on the thing? Or was it Fallout 3?

me and eel both have this laptop, it's awesome

plays games great, only downside is the screen has a poor contrast ratio and is 1366x768 -- doesn't bother me, since i prefer a low native res when coupled to a mobile gpu, but some people might find it limiting. it also spews heat like a beast when yer playing fairly intensive modern games like the last remnant and sacred 2 (both of which it runs aces).

other than that, build quality is great, it's wonderfully tacky, and runs like a champ. get it!

Sounds good. I think I'll pick it up next week.

One thing: does it come with a recovery disc/partition?

this will be reviewed by the two of us in the next borecast, with a thorough audio tour of specs and settings and games we have tested

short version: buy it, it's the best gaming laptop out there for the price

it comes with recovery discs, and asus support is top-notch

I might actually just go get this thing tomorrow morning.

Can't wait to hear you and Prole's detailed thoughts on the BC after I've played with it for a few days.

Good point about the lower rez being a plus for mobile gaming.  My laptop's 1080P screen looks nice but I have to dial down settings in many games to play at that resolution.

Yeah, I kinda regret getting a laptop with a really higher res. screen. It's gorgeous and all, but even with it's nice specs it can't handle it's native rez even in somehat older games.

Got it.

It was the last one BB had and the guy had broken the seal to show it to a customer once last month before they got their display model, so I saved $100 because they considered it "open-box". Fucking awesome.

overclocking on "turbo" provides a slight boost to certain games, but the "turbo extreme" setting doesn't provide enough of a gain over the regular turbo to warrant the heat increase, imo

hope you enjoy it!

This thing's WiFi driver isn't getting along with my router (old WRT54G) at all. Shit.

Love everything else though.

On the other hand, I primarily use my 1280x800 laptop for non-gaming shit, and I find the low resolution often frustrating.  Choose your resolution wisely!

Lower rez has never really bothered me, last time I remember it did was getting pixel holocaust when getting too close to things in Doom.
