Horrible movie, but it was made great because of the homosexual tensions between Jack and Emile Hirsch. Like, in all of their scenes together, you could feel Jack's need to fuck Emile.

Speed Racer is the epitome of unpretentious, straight-forward film-making. If anything, the pretentious movie-goers are the ones that didn't like it because it didn't have some deep meaning or metaphysical quandries or quirky emo characters. Speed Racer is all about having fun.

I just watched the end of it in high definition on Cinemax.  That final lap, set to Michael Giacchino score, is pretty awesome.  The visuals, the action, the sound make it an incredibly compelling climax.  It's like being a kid again.

You are going to go ape shit for Wolverine Origins. Seriously, that movie is also as simple, straight forward film making as you gonna get.

Bet it's gonna be the movie of 09 for the lot of you that love Speed Racer.

I couldn't care less about Wolverine Origins as it looks quiet terrible. It's really an entirely different ballpark from Speed Racer. See, with WO it's all about Wolverine flying around and blowing up helicopters and all kinds of crazy characters, but it comes across as being artificial and manufactured in some marketing department. With Speed Racer, it comes across much more as being an earnest attempt at making something fun and nostalgic, and largely succeeds.

You got it backwards.  It's conventional wisdom that a movie with a big budget is dumb entertainment, so spending that much signals lowbrow status.

Dialing down the spectacle in the name of authenticity, that's pretense.

I have the movie on blu-ray and if I do rewatch it, I fast forward past most sequence that doesn't involve the car races; it's probably the most shallow way to watch a movie.  The races are awesome but the most everything else is that intentionally campy I don't like, especially the little fat kid.  It's almost like skipping a cutscene in a game for me.

So we all agree that Twilight was better than Speed Racer? Speed Racer almost trumps it, due to it's beautiful shots of Christina Ricci's enormous five-head. Or was that Sleepy Hollow? But Emile Hirsch and Jack are also way cuter than that ugly guy that plays Edward Cullen.

I thought it was alright, I think they delivered on whatever vision for the filim they were going for, I just question why that vision was supposed to be a big budget blockbuster when it's pretty easy to see that most people are be completely out of sync with the choices they made.
