It's all random. Some people start off with powerful pets (very unfair). You can just keep creating characters (you can cheat by having them all be pupils of your main character).

Yea, the bear is such bullshit. I fought some dude that had 1) A bear 2) a Club 3) Super Strength. His bear hit for 20+ and he hit for 40+ with the club. FML

The funniest fight I had was where I was murdering this weak female with my polearm. Then she busts out this ninja move where she disarms me and uses my own weapon against me.

All that does it give the person whose pupil you are experience every time you level up, so you're not missing out on anything.
