Microwave is the best way to go. It takes like 45 minutes in the oven and sometimes it doesn't cook right.

I always found potatoes cooked in the microwave were a bit bouncy?  Maybe it depends on the type of potato.  I don't know, I always boil them.

Baked potato in the nucro-wave is the way to go, imo.  I wonder which costs less in energy usage?

Thats the issue I usually run into. I've always done the wrap in tin foil method but right now I've lightly doused it in oil and poked it with a fork throughout.

Has to be the microwave, the oven is at 350 and these sized potatoes will probably take 1 hour at least

I can taste the sour cream and starchy goodness already  :'(

You should par-boil them in the microwave first, rough up the surface to get crispy flakes then throw it into the oven. Jamie Oliver showed me how :tophat

I always microwave first to save a bit of time, then bake in the oven. Microwave cooking is pretty uneven. If it doesn't cook evenly, try cutting it up into bite-sized pieces first. I often bake a bunch of cut-up spuds in a tray with olive oil, salt and some sliced-up sausages or bacon. It's pretty bad-assed. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside.

I also need to know what your homemade mashed potato skills are.  They have to be just lump enough and, of course they have to be the proper kind of lumps to begin with.

mmmmmmm potatoes

the one thing I hate about bachelorhood is the lack of decently made potatoes.

The best way to do a potato is to cube the bitch (with skin on), throw it in a mixing bowl, add some Lowry's season salt and olive oil and stir. Then throw it in a covered skillet for about 13-18 minutes (need to stir it periodically though).

I need to try that too. Roasted herb baked potatoes always intrigued me also.

I just finished eating them, oh man, they came out pretty good but definitely too a while to cook (1 1/2 hours). I put some sour cream, salt and salt cured ham on top. Sooo good.

Truth.  You can use all sorts of seasoning, too.  Lately I've been using garlic seasoning.  Mmmm... garlicky potatoes.

it's all just an endless cycle of drunkeness, meaness, poverty and potato-eating really. it's amazing any of us ever find the time to win Nobel Prizes for literature these days.

microwave  :yuck

Just open a slit on the top, throw some cheese in that bitch, wipe some butter on the potato, wrap it in aluminum, throw it in a pan, and stick it in the oven. Time/heat will vary depending on how "crispy" you want it. test it by trying to stick a knife through it

I prefer to cut my potatoes up, put a tad of olive oil in a pan, dumb the potatoes in while mixing in some spices (garlic pepper, salt, some creole stuff) and some I Can't Believe it's Not Butter, putting aluminum over top of the pan, and sticking it in the oven. Or just cook them on top of the stove

The absolute best way to make a potato is to bake it in the microwave, and when it's finished do the following:
1) Mash the living shit out of it with a fork
2) Add copious amounts of butter and sour cream and continue to mash

And while this tastes fantastic, you run two risks:
1) Becoming a lardo
2) Early death
3) :(

What we do is, cut the potato up into thin horizontal slices, a la potato chips... then top the slices with butter, paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper... then bake in the oven till they're nice and crispy. What GoofyGoober said, with the addition of some rosemary and bay leaves, works too.

I just coat in it vegetable oil, toss on some salt, pop it in the stove, doesn't seem to dry out

That's what I do.  Season with olive oil and salt.  Puncture with holes using a fork, including a straight line of holes along "top" to pop open later.  Pop them in the oven right on the rack and bake.
