PC-BORE: Is ~90C too hot for a computer?
« on: April 07, 2009, 03:29:18 PM »
I think The MAF Sexbox is getting too hot. When I first start it up, it's as fast as hell. But after a while it slows down and gets hot. It seems like the hotter the back of the machine is, the slower it gets. It gets down to the point where video (just youtube video, not even high quality) is unplayable.

Please help PC BORE.

put a case fan in, or get one of those screen-door side panels for better air flow

Get a can of air and blow it out. or take a vacuum hose to the heatsink.

I've always been curious about this.  Everyone works real hard to get their stuff around 30-60C, but at what point does the heat actually make a difference and damage stuff?  If things don't get damaged until 100C or higher than who cares if your stuff is at 30C or 70C.

I'm also kind of biased because I've never bought 3rd party fans and the default fan cooling leaves my PCs around 50-60C.

You normally don't have to worry about heat actually damaging stuff unless it's like oven heat.

Sudden changes in temp are actually more damaging in the long run, such as turning your system off and on often.

But it gets up to 90C with the case completely off! With it on, I have no idea how hot it gets.

tolerance ceilings are usually around 90-110 degrees celsius sustained. above that and it's time to get worried. note that this assumes decent cooling, like a working fan and undamaged heatsink.

step A) ensure fans are actually running
step B) if fans are running, check for dust buildup that is blocking air and clean
step C) if neither of the above solutions helps, reapply thermal paste and reseat heatsink firmly, as you are likely having contact problems.

100c is too much. You should be at 65-ish at most on a desktop (laptop usually can go a little higher).
