Help me in finding this novel please!!
« on: April 08, 2009, 02:27:53 PM »
I am trying to figure out the name of a novel that I read a long time ago.

The story is set in the U.S. during the 1800s ( I guess). The story centers around a teenager and a deer. He finds the deer in the woods, and he raises it in his father's barn. His dad puts up with the deer for a long time, until the deer ends up eating all their crops and destroying the field and as a result the family doesn't have a source of income anymore.

The boy tries to get rid of the deer, but it keeps coming back. His dad finally decides that he wants to kill the deer, but the boy ends up shooting the deer instead because he feels that he is responsible for the mess. The boy then runs away from his parents for a couple weeks, but then he comes back at the end.

It is a very touching novel. (but you won't get that from my description lol)

Does anyone know what it is called?

i never read it, but it was always prominently featured in my school libraries.  i recognized the kid holding the deer and it immediately leapt to mind.

my gf is reading Go Tell it to the Mountain and I laughed mistaking it for My Side of the Mountain...  that got me in trouble.

Never read Bridge to Terabithia.  At least his friend zone situation was apparently cleared up without any BS though.  Usually drama is involved.

How about The Cay?  Magical Negro and important lessons learned.

i avoided the magical negro section of my library.

most of what i read was children's genre fiction stuff.  like Belliars, Alexander, Dahl and the like with the occasional Hardy Boys

is that it?

Wow, thank you thank you so much!!!  :)

I had no idea that it won the Pulitzer price, and I am not surprised. It is a great novel.

Don't forget that she died from grief because you were hooking up with your teacher.  :hump

Until I was 23 I thought The Prince by Machiavelli and The Little Prince, the story of a kid who lives on a asteroid with his pet flower, were the same book.  The fable setting of a lone individual on a barren planet made sense as the setting for a parable about how to be the grandest asshole of all.  When people would mention how The Little Prince was their favorite book I wondered what sort of abusive childhood they must have led.
