I used to mod at GAF and it was pretty fuckin' dull. A lot of self-congratulatory hijinks in the mod forum banning threads.

That said, the ability to edit users' posts ROCKS. I do in fact miss that little slice of internet abuse.

Willco is a good mod, as is White Man and Amirox (and Wellington). I like mods who do their job, but don't constantly take things into their own hands all the time. A thread that has lots of debate/discussion shouldn't get locked all the time. If someone calls another person a distinguished mentally-challenged fellow, there really is no reason to ban them for a week.

If I was a mod, I would warn people before banning them. I'd come into threads and say "hey, no name calling. Any more unruly behavior and I'll ban someone." That's how you do it.

Mods shouldn't be allowed to do anything they want either. I really like EvilBore's mod election idea. You know you're a good mod and are doing your job when no one notices you. A bad mod grows a trigger happy reputation. Giving the community a chance to give their insight through voting is the way to go, and I applaud Willco and MAF.

I was a mod in the fitness section of a popular forum years ago.  It was fun at first, then became a drag, then became fun again when I abused my power, then became fun when I started a pile of drama and blew some shit up, then I got bored and left.

Since then, it's become a pay site and all my alt characters were lost because I wouldn't pay for them.  :lol

In short, being a mod kinda sucks, I feel bad for them in a lot of ways, the fun part of being on a message board is letting loose and having a personality, with opinions.  But having a personality and opinions while being a mod means you're gonna get branded as a nazi mod douchebag.  So you either accept you're gonna be a shitty mod, or a boring poster.  You can't be both.

yeah, not interesting... I've modded some high-traffic game forum for a while and it's nothing worth investing efforts into

people blame mods all the time, but most of the time they can't really do what they want to sort things out, because then they'd deal with the wrath of all the modding committee -- while that doesn't excuse assholish abuses of powers and whimsical bans, I don't think that mods are worth hating on, users are treated badly because often the mods dislike one another and they don't want to cooperate and negociate to undo a mod's unfair actions, and then a lot has to be hidden to users to project an image of harmony -- but in private modding forums the bellicosity is obvious

in the end I gave up doing actions because  i came back after a while and saw that the other mods had become too lenient, and members were insulting one another -- so I decided to be fair and warn/ban those who actually violated the rules, but then the members started protesting since they were used to some insane level of leniency, and then the other mods didn't really care for my intents as much as for the mini-uprising that occured, so i backed off since i didn't want to start fights

there even was a miniature counter-forum, kinda like the GAF/OA setup... at some point i went there after a while and searched my nickname, and saw people analyzing my actions and quoting me, and then saying that it was unfair when most of the time I just had dealt with huge assholes... it was like, WOW... mods are misunderstood and it's kinda frustrating since a lot of users are just thoughtless whiny bitches, i never looked at unsensitive OA shit talking the same way afterwards lol

I've worked for a few companies whose sites had huge forums sections with dedicated mods (mostly very young marketing-type interns), and it seemed like the most unfulfilling and meaningless job: filtering through thousands of posts, printing-out amusing flamebait to pass around to your fellows, and panicking to do damage control whenever someone says something that could potentially embarrass the site/company (or negatively influence advertisers/revenue)...

It's important to understand just how the experience of being a mod changes you.

The moment modhood is bestowed upon you, you begin to percieve the world in a new light. The sun shines brighter, the air smells cleaner, and if you pause to meditate for a moment you can feel your newly granted abilities integrating themselves with the gentle ebb and flow of the natural world. You are no longer predator nor prey, but rather a custodian granted a sacred trust, moving quietly through life and working to ensue that all is right.

Within a week of attaining modhood the ghost of Uncle Ben Parker will come to you in your dreams and explain to you that with great power comes great responsibility. Upon waking, you may find yourself crying, but these are not tears of loss. No, instead it's an expression of the inate, fatherly love Uncle Ben feels for you, and afterwards your soul will feel truly cleansed. I should also note that these tears are of an entirely masculine nature and will cause you no shame. This is true even if you happen to be a woman.

As you move among the lesser mortals of the world, you'll realize that they are drawn to your power as a sunflower turns towards the sun. Even the most trivial of interactions will become a life-changing moment for these men and women, a defining experience that they will reflect upon for the rest of their lives as they strive to better themselves and live up to your example. Likewise, the animal kingdom will acknowledge you as one of their own, pausing in hope that you may deliver a sermon before moving about your business. You will not actively realize your bond with the beasts of the earth but will find yourself occasionally handing out entire
loaves of bread to the birds in the park. This is natural and is nothing to be concerned about.

I should also take a moment to realize that both men and women will be drawn to aura of power and authority for more, shall we say, carnal reasons. You may even find that you have attracted a small pack of hopefuls who will follow you like a combination of the Pied Piper and Barry White. Be gentle with them, but do not fear to deny them what they truly seek. Just make sure that you pace yourself, as being a moderator is a tiring business and you'll need to get a good night's sleep at least once a week in order to do your best.

As the years go by, you will become accustomed to your place in the world, weilding your power in the manner of a benevolent and all-powerful priest-king, revered as a god among your people and treating them as a shephard treats their flock. However, though you use your abilities - always for good and not evil - on a daily basis, the thrill and wonder of the experience will never fade, and each time will truly be like that first glorious moment when the power flows through you, like a song, like a symphony, like nothing you've felt before yet will revel in again and again and again.

In the twilight years of your life - approximately 200 years from now, as being a moderator bestows increased longevity - you will look back on your achievements with pride, the sort of paternal pride one feels for children who have grown tall and strong under your care. Younger moderators, humbled by your wisdom and experience, will come to you for advice - but will then stay by your side, listening enraptured as you spin tales of days gone by, sharing your triumphs...but not your sorrows, for you will have none.

When at last you leave this plane of existence the world will mourn. Dressed in the pure white robes of their profession, other moderators will carry you to the top of Mount Everest where your funereal pyre will burn like a second star for 23 days and nights. World leaders will attend the wake, which will be transmitted by every possible broadcasting medium as the world sits watching and reflecting on what a precious gift you were to humanity.

As for yourself, you will take a moment to say goodbye to the world that you so loved before transcending this reality and achieving nirvana. Uncle Ben will be waiting for you, smiling gently.

Truly, to be a moderator is the pinacle of human achievement.

At least, that's what I've been told.
