And I'm debating whether or not I should get my typical hibachi steak meal. While most of the other stuff on the menu sounds tasty, I've always always gotten hibachi steak.

Also: What sushi should I get today? I'm thinking a roll and a piece of nigiri or two. I've never had sea urchin, so I'm debating that.

I'd actually love to see some Japanese food made in the USA. I'm guessing it loses a lot of subtlety (unless you pay serious money) but gains portion size? Any chance of pics?

Heh, I'm talking with one of my friends on FB right now about sushi... since I'm taking a date out for sushi tonight at Kotobuki, #1 restaurant on LI. My favorite roll is the eel avocado roll, so go for that! Also, I had a spicy yellowtail roll, with a bit of tempura batter stuffed in, that was great, last time I was out for sushi.

I actually have some pics of the little Japanese food place I worked at in Durango Colorado. We made a bento box like the one featured but without the melon and a better salad. And we added choice of sushi roll and two cubes of sweet soy glazed and fried tofu. So really nothing like the one pictured.

The chef was a hardass. His previous job was to travel the world and open up four star restaurants and get them running. When he came to Durango he was fresh from serving as executive chef at Nobu in Aspen. I say all this to try to convince you that although it was a small mountain town it was as authentic as possible.

The Udon Noodle set with tempura veggies and those sweet soy packets that hold rice.

California Jewel. A cali roll with topiko on top.

I've been to Tokyo and for Sushi, it would seem that the nice Sushi restaurants in major US cities aren't much different from the ones in Japan.

Maybe it's because Sushi mostly just require good fish and cutting skills?

Portion sizes are about the same too. No elegant Sushi restaurant in the US would serve gigantic pieces of Sushi or Sashimi.

For things like Yakidori or Tempura, Japanese restaurants destroy their US counterparts.

Sushi places in both Japan and the states are pretty similar, unless you go farther into the suburbs where it can get weird...

I agree for the most part, but there are a few Japanese restaurants and izakayas in Seattle that are very accurate. Probably because they're owned and operated by actual Japanese people. Daimonji in Seattle (Georgetown neighborhood) does a killer okonomiyaki.

so I went with a combination lunch box yesterday, and my oh my was it delicious.

I got a Beef Teriyaki box, which included:
soup
salad
around 6 ounces or so of teriyaki beef
white rice
a california roll
and some fruit

I also got the following for our table (but really me, since Nikki doesn't like sushi):
A sushi appetizer, which had 6 pieces of various sushi (tuna, salmon, and fluke were the only ones I was pretty positive about). Along with that I got a piece of sea urchin. That was fucking good.

Damnit, I'm a glutton.

My favorite near me is called China QUEEN. It's SO YUMMY.

I love the Japanese place Ecro and I go to, though. I prefer to sit at the hibachi table, but he's weird about sitting there unless we're in a big group. The food is just as good at normal tables, though.
