Pick a DS RPG for me
« on: April 17, 2009, 08:53:43 AM »
I can't decide so I want EB's knowledgeable gamers (and Himuro) to tell me what to play.

I like the sound of Etrian Odyssey and Dark Spire but I'm not interested in grinding. Would prefer something with an interesting battle system.

No faggoty stuff like Mario & Luigi or Crystal Chronicles pls. Opinions on Pokemon Platinum are welcome though  :-*

I really dug Dragon Quest 5, if you haven't played it.  It's also not grindy at all--easily the least grindy DQ game I have played.  I haven't had to grind once.  Mind you, it is rather oldskool and the story is, well, I just finished it and I really don't remember any of it.

Valkyrie Profile DS is also really good from what I have played, but it's more styled after Japanese SRPGs in structure than normal JRPGs.

FF4:DS is an awesome remake, but it is grindy. CT:DS is basically a port of the SNES version.  The extra content blows.

DQ4 first, then DQ5.
FF4 if you want a challenge.  It's not really grindy it's just fucking hard if you don't grind (but hard in a good challenging way).
None of these have interesting battle systems as they are old-school and simple.

Avoid EO as it's just a grind.  Avoid FF3 it's all grind.  What other rpgs have come out in English on the DS?

Yeah, the first ds one was a lot of fun.  It was like Zelda-lite.  I still gotta pick up the sequel one of these days.

It's actually more like Diablo than Zelda, like how the offline mode and multiplayer are pretty much totally different experiences, and how your character is only half-way leveled and has no really decent loot at the end of the normal difficulty.

That got me interested. I was looking for videos on youtube, and this gamespot review came up. This is the worst video review, professional or amateur, that I've ever seen.

How does this game compare to Ring of Fates?

TWEWY's an action RPG, but it's pretty much must have.

Aside from that DQIV and DQV are the best "no/very little grinding needed" RPGs on the system.

wtf

i grinded tons in dq4 ds and I'm the type that rarely runs from battles

I'm in the midst of DQ5 right now... although I played the Japanese SNES version and the fan translation a while back, I almost completely forgot just how awesome the game is. Apart from the beginning, it's not grindy at all. It's also paced really well (you never spend more than a half hour in a dungeon, stuff is always happening in the storyline), and looks pretty nice for DS 3D. Currently my favorite game on the system...

Also another recommendation for The World Ends With You, awesome, highly stylistic and creative game.

I'm sorry you're terrible at games?  That's what happens when you spend so much time playing broken RPGs like FFVIII.

I didn't stop once in it to grind and I got through it fine, even though I'm fucking awful at RPGs.

I'm not even bad at rpgs. There were multiple times where I had to stop and grind because I was 1-2 levels behind an enemy. I usually play rpgs underleveled anyways, so I make due usually. But in DQ4, I had to grind on at least 3 occasions to beat a boss. One time while as the princess at the tournament, another on chapter 4 I think. Another at the final boss, I had to level up about 2 times to beat him.

I've never had to grind in any other DQ game. Only DQ4 ds and from what I hear that's because they scaled down the environments from the original NES game but kept the same random battle rate. So either way, you'd be under leveled.

A lot of people on this forum have had the same experience and I wouldn't say any of us are particularly bad at rpgs.

Did you do the post-game dungeon? Are you telling me you managed to kill that Chinese food boss without grinding?

I have to side with Himu here:  DQ4 is considerably grindier than DQ5, and even if it weren't, DQ5 is still the superior game.

and yeah, the Crystal Chronicle games (at least the first one that I played) are pretty good.

Aeana can beat the dungeon because she's played the game probably 1 billion times. :(

I didn't do the money cheat.

What level were you when you did the bonus dungeon? I was like 52 or something.

Also, as I said, DQ4 ds is the only DQ where I EVER had to stop and grind. I'm not one of the people who thinks DQ is particularly grind heavy.

And just to be clear, the grinding wasn't really much of a issue either due to DQ's fabulous battle system.

I mostly always had to level once or twice when playing DQ4 ds if I had to grind. So if a boss kept beating me because I didn't have enough HP or defense something, I'd just go out of my way to grind for 5 minutes to level up one time, go back and beat the boss.

So, for the most part, it wasn't particularly intrusive.

But I still had to do it.

The bonus dungeon, on the other hand... I still haven't bothered beating that Chinese food boss. The normal enemies are easy as shit there, but those two guys rape me.

My stats as of chapter 6:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Time: 45 hours
level 36
[close]

The main game can easily be done with the levels you gain through the main quest, as you said. But a few bumps in the road kinda made ruined the pace for me. I don't resort to leveling up when I'm in a bind in rpgs, you see.

I'm not saying the game is even grind heavy, because it's not.

I don't think DQ requires grinding. People who say you have to grind slimes are dumb. I guess DQ4 ds was an odd one with me since, I've beaten DQ1, 2, 4, 5, and 8 and the 4's the only one I really had to grind into beat it. Not a particularly big flaw, since it takes all up 10 minutes. But it did leave a bad taste in my mouth. Doesn't matter since DQ4 is probably in my top 3 favorite DQ games as of now.

I tried out The World Ends With You. I liked the idea, but couldn't get into the battle system. I played about 5 hours, took it back to the store and got Final Fantasy III ds. I'd like to try it again though. Since I"m not big on stylus gameplay I'm still skeptical if I should dive in again or not.

ORCS & ELVES is the best rpg on the ds.

you can probably find it for really cheap too. found it in a bargain bin last december in the US for $6.

Yeah Orcs and Elves is pretty fun but it's definitely an aquired taste. Your character moves in steps (meaning you push a button to take each step) and the game plays out like a 3d rogue-like game (but not nearly as deep or complex). The game is a hack 'n slash mixed in with turn based elements, and grinding is kept at a bare minimum.  There is no music but the sound effects that come from the dungeons make for some good atmosphere. There is also several difficulty options for those of you who like it rough. It's easily worth the $15 if you're looking for something nontraditional and can stomach its old school approach.

doom rpg (even though it's only available on cellphones) is pretty rad too, btw!

I reeaally wish they would port this. That and Orcs and Elves 2, but I doubt that's going to happen.   :'(

ya i know. it was a pain playing doom rpg on my cellphone. but it was still fun. would be so fucking awesome if orcs & elves 2 was ported to the ds... along with the more recently released wolfenstein rpg, which i also haven't played:

They probably decided not to port them based on Orcs and Elves sales, which is silly because Doom RPG would sell better due to the brand alone. And that Wolfenstein RPG looks hot! Wish I had a good enough cell phone to play it.

TWEWY clearly wins, albeit the postmodern-looking art might look a bit faggoty to you at first.

I liked the new Crystal Chronicles game (Echoes of Time) too, it's a great mindless loot game and plays okay online.

CT is lamer than DQ games battlewise though, because DQ games actually have regular battles that wear you down over the course of a dungeon.
