Aside from Sam and Frodo, and the final like 30 minutes or so of ROTK, i think the LOTR trilogy is really amazing, i love it.

i liked all three, but rotk dragged on for too long; they could've cut it a good 15 minutes shorter
and it was pretty lame that all it took for that nazgul creature to be destroyed was a tiny woman with a sword

That's in the book though and he was destroyed by the hobbits weapon which they had gotten in a part of the book that was cut from the movie.

ROTK had some problems but I still love it because I love conclusions to trilogies. TTT > FOTR BTW, easily.

FOTR is the best edited/most concise of the three, definitely. But I still think TTT and ROTK are great as well. IMO the storylines in those movies aren't nearly as compelling as in FOTR, where you're mainly just following the fellowship. In the second film you have to deal with Frodo/Sam wandering around, Aragorn/Legolas/Gimli hunting for hobbits and the annoying Merry/Pippin story; plus the movie has the most annoying scene imo, ie the part where Aragorn "dies."

ROTK is more focused imo, at least until the very end; the multiple endings don't piss me off but they definitely could have been handled better.

The last thing I would call ROTK is focused. It's a series of disjointed scenes that have no flow.

Focused was FOTR. It was about collecting a band of people and going on a mission. That's why it was the best movie.

I preferred the book to the other 2 books, also. Basically, I think the first part of the saga where you're following the Fellowship on a smaller scale as they come together and set out is so much more engaging and satisfying (both in the books and in the movies) than either of the other 2 books/movies where the conflict opens up and becomes much more global and less intimate. Ive always felt that FotR was an adventure movie in the truest sense, wheareas TTT/RotK are basically war movies.

All the best character stuff is in FotR too. There isnt a single moment as emotional in either TTT or RotK as Gandalf's "death" and Boromir's death in FotR.

Probably something to do with a man not being able to kill a nazgul. Isn't that part of the mythology?

RotK did have that scene where Gandalf describes the afterlife to Pippin just as the battle was about to be lost.

Since RotK was already longer than fuck, I never got why they cut the Mouth of Sauron scene in the theatrical cut. I always felt that was a really powerful scene in the book. Its kind of hokey the way Jackson did it though, so maybe thats why they cut it.

i can't comment because i didn't make it more than 50 pages into the first book.

I always hated how after the battle, these invulnerable ghosts just swoop in. It was so anticlimatic.

It would've been better to have them go away after they took out the swarthies on their boats.

Agreed overall, although I think Gandalf's explanation of the afterlife, Denethor's end, some of the final battle charges/etc were also great emotional moments that equal those in FOTR imo

I just love fantasy shit in general and massive battles in particular. The Battle of Pelennor Fields in RotK was fuck awesome, especially the charge of the rohirrim. I guess fantasy stuff like LOTR tickles my nerd prostate in the way bad Sam Raimi movies do it for Federwang.
