I mean good lord, yes the guy is fast, and he runs his mouth like crazy, but i've just finished watching 2 documentaries, and a couple of youtube videos, after i had watched the Tyson documentary, and the trailer for http://www.firstshowing.net/2009/04/17/must-watch-fantastic-documentary-trailer-for-facing-ali/. And this guy is basically hit grab, hit grab, hit grab, hit grab, for fucks sakes, the guy basically just tires the other guy, when he was fighting frazier and foreman, the guy is always grabbing the back of the neck, and holding, holding....while the other guys are trying to have a fight.

Well, he was smart at least. But after this dose of history, i hate him, feels like a cheater, and he was an asshole. Can't believe i liked Will Smith in Ali.

I just think that if they didn't have gloves, and all those rules, Ali would've been murdered by Frasier and Foreman. But inside the ring, he's really fucking smart.

Paul Zimmerman wrote about this at Sports Illustrated's site.

He said that Ali would lean on Frazier in the clinch and tire him by forcing him to support Ali's weight. Zimmerman wasn't writing it as a slam. He seemed to appreciate the strategy that went into. I think this was in a piece he did on the Lewis-Tyson fight (even though he's normally the NFL writer).

That makes no sense.

If you want to win, you do what you can to win. Having a normal fistfight is totally different from being in the ring. Saving your energy is a STRATEGY, so is clinching.

Boxing is more than beating people to a pulp, it's a sport and it has rules to follow.

I'm pretty sure a street fight between Ali and Frasier would be dope, but what happens in the ring happens in the ring. There's no belt or title to lose, in a normal street fight.

How many heavyweight boxing matches have you seen? Clinching isn't exactly a rarity.

To really understand Ali, you have to watch his very early matches (much like Tyson). What Tyson was to power, Ali was to speed. You also have to take into account that he lost 2-3 years out of his PRIME because of the Vietnam War. By 1970 (when he is reinstated), he is a 30 year old guy with diminishing skills (especially his speed). He had to adopt a new fight style to compete with the other guys.

Something Tyson never figured out.

Modern boxing is horrible from the few matches i've seen.

But this old stuff, is amazing, the guys really fight. The thing that i hate about Ali though, is that he really uses it non stop, and it just feels like a cheat.

I'm not too into the sport though, and it's definitely a dinosaur in the world that is embracing MMA.

I dunno whether it's fair or kosher or not, but that grabbing stuff is really tedious and annoying to watch. When I was a kid I remember being really disappointed that real boxing wasn't more like Punch-Out.

His footwork was amazing, and his boxing techniques were impressive. I mean, in terms of strength Foreman, Frazier, Liston, etc were superior yet Ali prevailed. In short, Ali was a fucking beast

I feel the same way. I can't get into MMA at all but I've been a fan of boxing for as long as I can remember.

btw, Fight Night round 4 is looking awesome. They did away with rock em sock em robots shit and are actually making a proper boxing game.

IIRC the game still uses the right stick to pull off moves, but you can still use the face buttons if you don't want to mess with that. There were some videos of round 4 on gametrailers that were taken down for some reason.

I find boxing a lot more interesting than for example MMA because of its limitations. I'm well aware of the skill necessary, but it still feels like plain brawling. Boxing is more focused.

Nah, you're right, outside of the top 10-20 in each weight class, the striking in MMA (as far as footwork and hand speed goes, at least) is generally pretty poor. Give it another 10-15 years and we'll start seeing some true phenoms.
