coulda made it look superficially different than fallout 3. 'course it's only a few screenies, so i'm hoping that desert wasteland doesn't looks strangely similar to a nuclear washington dc wasteland

I dunno, those screens look pretty different to me in a superficial way.  Instead of the GREEN/BROWN scheme F3 had going for it, this has blue sky and orange dirt.  That dino picture looks nothing like F3 in terms of atmosphere.

Plus given that Vegas will have all kinds of lights and billboards and stuff it'll probably differentiate it even more.

I thought Fallout 3 was a pretty bad looking game but that didn't stop me it from being my favorite game of 2008.  That said, the biggest problem was the animation and how stiff and awkward it always was.

Feargus Urquhart, Chris Parker, Darren Monahan, Chris Avellone and Chris Jones. In July 2005, they hired Josh Sawyer of Icewind Dale fame.

This is gonna be the best game since Soul Calibur on DC!

Kotor II was their first game as a company and it got rushed out the door by Lucasarts before they could finish it.

NWN2 is a really good RPG, though it's got some technical issues that are annoying.

Mask of the Betrayer is even better than NWN2.

From what I've seen Alpha Protocol looks pretty good, it most likely got delayed so they can either finish it up or so that they won't have to delay Fallout: New Vegas.

New info posted on GAF

  • It shows the command wheel for followers, with 8 commands: toggle melee/ranged, open inventory, toggle stay close/keep distance, back up, toggle aggressive/passive AI, use stimpack, toggle wait here/follow me, return to normal dialogue.
  • Scripting is wittier, characters more distinct. Example from vigour test word association: mother-human shield.
  • Opening inventory consists of a kit from the doc, adapted to your starting stats (like Fallout 1).
  • The Nevada area is less affected by the nuclear war, so it has plant life, relatively unspoiled houses, and in visual presentation has saturated colours and a bright sky.
  • There's a tutorial (led by a character named Sunny who looks a lot like Moira Brown), but unlike Fallout 3, it's optional, so you can hit the open game in 5 minutes from starting
  • NCR and Caesar's Legion are the confirmed faction, article assumes Brotherhood of Steel will be in but they weren't not mentioned in the presentation.
  • "In New Vegas it's all about the player examining the ideologies of the various groups that are controlling the area and supporting one over the others," explains Sawyer. "Each of the ideologies will have something good that you can relate to, but will also have massive flaws."
  • When asked about PS3's Fallout 3 being inferior to the others and if New Vegas will do better, Obsidian devs make no promises but indicate it was a learning process and they're working with all 3 platforms and all have problems.
  • The New Vegas strip is still in construction but will have gambling, variety shows and concerts.
  • Electrical power is key in the faction struggle.
  • Radiation is still a problem, there's a nuclear test site to explore north of New Vegas.
  • The soundtrack will blend "Rat Pack style tunes with more Western numbers".
  • New Vegas doesn't tell a single-player story, but weaves decision into the gameworld and gives you greater power to influence things than Fallout 3 did.
  • On top of adding back in geckos, New Vegas has a whole new type of animal: mutated mountain rams called Big Horners.

Yay at the bolded. More games need a Tutorial skip

I think hardcore mode will be a fun challenge but there should be an xp multiplier or some perk associated with it or something as a reward.  Cause it'll add time to everything you do.

And are you saying that they need to fix the AI glitches that littered FO3 or that you want the enemies to flank you and flush you out (which is sort of useless in a game that has VATS)?

Enemies that use cover, enemies that don't unload entire clips into the wall that you are hiding behind without bothering to move on you, enemies that rush you when your AP is low or when you reload, etc. AP isn't infinite, and there's plenty of opportunity for them to inject some semblance of tactics into the gameplay.

Don't get me wrong; Fallout 3 is easily one of my favorites of this gen (from what I've played so far at least), but the enemies are essentially bullet sponges once you get some decent gear.

Aim assist for non-VATS combat on consoles would be nice as well

The engine didn't age well back when Fallout 3 came out.  Didn't stop it from being awesome.

I'm hoping ES5 and Fallout 4 use id Tech 5, but yeah, I don't have high expectations for these games visually.

WOW THAT ENGINE HAS NOT AGED WELL

The fact that they're using the old engine instead of a brand new one is the reason we're getting New Vages in 2010 instead of 2012.

Anyway, I really like the way this game sounds. Lots of little tweaks and fixes to provide an even better experience than the original, I can get behind that.

Video interview with the project director:

http://www.giantbomb.com/josh-sawyer-on-fallout-new-vegas/17-2425/

Important notes:

-Reputation system that is used in addition to karma system, the later deals with things that you're actually seen doing
-Twice as many guns
-Weapon upgrades
-Great emphasis on companions through the companion wheel, recruiting companion is more natural, most companions have some kind of quest available for them [sounds like Mass Effect 2]

you mean id tech 5?

Rage itself isn't out until 2011, so I wouldn't expect an id tech 5 game before that.  Maybe they will pull a Vampire Bloodlines and release another game using the engine on the same day.

And Table Tennis before that. Interestingly, it appears to have been used in at least one of the PSP titles as well, probably as a test, but also likely because Rockstar wanted to distance themselves from Renderware, as an EA-owned middleware solution.

Because the game needed to be released in a timely fashion? Did anyone really think the ES or Fallout games were gonna switch from Gamebryo this generation?

This.

Building your own new engine especially for a game of this sort is a long process. Unless you are switching to the Unreal Engine or something everybody will stick with their current engines until the next generation starts.

I don't think that Bethesda will get rid of Gamebyro anytime soon.

Rage will probably release sometime next year and it's a safe bet that neither ES5 nor Fallout 4 will make it out anytime this year, so I don't think it's out side the realm of possibility that id Tech 5 will be used, especially since id's been under the Zenimax banner for a full year already.

If Fallout 4 uses id tech 5, then Fallout 4 will be released next generation.

Considering how long it's taking id to get Rage out the door, I can't help but find it unlikely that an id tech 5 powered Fallout 4 or Elder Scrolls would come out in the next 4 years. Plus, Bethesda has been using a version of Gamebryo since Morrowind and besides the games looking extremely dated, it's worked out for them. I don't think they're going to stop using it anytime soon.

Why buy in with id if you're not going to use their tech? To me, that was the big reason why they picked up id in the first place, to get access to an advanced, proprietary game engine.

It definitely makes sense in the long run for Bethesda to use id tech in their games. Especially since they are weak on the tech side but strong on the content side. The only holdups I would guess is that id can be a bit prickly and prima donish at times. And timing it out so that it works for whenever the next true Bethesda games are coming and when the next gen is going to start.
