Fallout 4 will probably use RAGE or the ES5 engine

Id Tech 5-highly unlikely...maybe next gen

Rage will probably release sometime next year and it's a safe bet that neither ES5 nor Fallout 4 will make it out anytime this year, so I don't think it's out side the realm of possibility that id Tech 5 will be used, especially since id's been under the Zenimax banner for a full year already.

My reasons are more engine related :)

-Main reason why RAGE runs so fast is baking everything possible into megatextures, but obviously Bethesda needs 30 fps...so that would work well

-then you have how easy(cheap) is the engine for building Bethesda like RPG,people have to be trained, etc

-megatexture size is also the issue...multiple 360 discs ahoy

And there is one more issue

If those games are going to be released anytime soon their development started ages ago...Bethesda is not going to switch engines just like that...unless Gamebyro has spontaneously self-combusted

This is from one year old interview
Quote
GameObserver: After Oblivion, what made you guys decide to reuse the Gamebryo engine for Fallout 3?

Ashley Cheng: Gamebryo allowed us to get up and running very quickly with Morrowind. Since then, we’ve taken this core technology and added new features on top of it. We’ve actually had the guys at Gamebryo come to us, and ask if we would be interested in a particular shader or feature, only to turn them down and say, sorry, but we’ve already written our own version. With each new project, we scope how much time we have and decide which systems to upgrade. A major reason many projects are delayed or never ship is because the developers decide to start from scratch. Games these days cost way too much for that kind of reboot. For most programmers, it’s easier to write new code than to read old code -- it takes a lot of discipline to selectively upgrade parts of your technology and to maintain others.

GameObserver: How does the Gamebryo engine differ from other engines, like Unreal, given the types of games you tend to make?

Ashley Cheng: We’ve been building on top of Gamebryo for the past 8 years. There is no replacement for the learning and iteration that goes into building technology for that long. An engine is simply a tool. Anybody can use a paint brush and paper – it’s how you use it to create your art. It is the same with game engines.

We are very particular with our needs and they are mostly related to our editor. Our editor is powerful, allowing our content folks to quickly create quests, conversations, cities, dungeons, landscape, etc... you name it -- we do it faster than anybody else in the industry. No one can match us when it comes to vast, open-ended beautiful worlds full of NPCs, quests and dialogue.

GameObserver: Are you planning on changing or updating the engine in future projects, and if so, what changes are we to see in future games from a technical point of view.

Ashley Cheng: Absolutely. While we would never start from scratch completely, we often redesign and upgrade systems between projects. The important thing is to properly scope your time, resources and priorities before you start the work. We also spend a lot of time in preproduction, trying new things out -- this is one of the most important phases of our development.

GameObserver: What limits did you have while using Gamebryo and what do you wish the engine was capable of doing in the future?

Ashley Cheng: We’re pretty happy with Gamebryo -- because of all the years we’ve had iterating and updating our technology, we’re at the point now that we decide our own destiny. We definitely evaluate new stuff coming in future versions of Gamebryo and are always looking at what the best options are.

hardcore mode sounds great and I'm glad they have the option to turn it off if it gets annoying.

my only real concern with it is the item management since one of the worst things in Fallout 3 was managing your items.  It's not like STALKER where you have a visual grid of everything.  Fallout 3 was just a list of stuff.

you can play the entire game without kill anyone by using boxing gloves, sneaking, and bean bag shotguns  :lol

or you can kill everyone and still finish the game (except kids)

haha the owners of casinos reward you for doing good by giving you drinks and suites and things like that.  this game sounds awesome.

there was one video that mentioned that you can stick C4 in people's pockets now.  If you're sneaky enough, you can set it up so everyone in an area explodes at once  :lol

I really like what I'm hearing about the game.  Basing it off factions that have different currencies and ideas and the game evolving from there sounds great.  I thought Fallout 3 was the weakest when it was just about me going through the main missions.  I just want to be a dude on the wasteland living there.  It makes me want to play hardcore even more now that they went into the general structure.

Quote
Whatever happens in Vegas stays there — even after the apocalypse.

The upcoming futuristic video game Fallout: New Vegas takes place after a nuclear war with China decimates the USA. But Wayne Newton— "Mr. Las Vegas" — survives as the voice of a DJ programmed centuries earlier.

That his essence endures such desolation suggests Newton's spirit "could almost survive anything," says the entertainer, 68, a Vegas fixture for more than 40 years, whose show goes to the MGM Grand this fall.

"Even in the post-apocalypse, there's still Wayne Newton," says the game's producer, Jason Bergman of Bethesda Softworks. "I think he got a kick out of that."

In the latest title in the hit franchise (out Oct. 19, $60 for PS3 and Xbox 360, $50 for PCs, ages 17-up), players hear from "Mr. New Vegas" as they explore the irradiated Strip. (In Fallout's story line, it's 2280, more than 200 years after a nuclear holocaust.)

Newton joins a marquee cast that includes Matthew Perry (Friends), Zach Levi (Chuck), Kris Kristofferson, Michael Dorn (Star Trek: The Next Generation) and Felicia Day (The Guild). Ron Perlman (Hellboy) serves as the game's narrator, a role he has played in several Fallout games, including the 1997 original.

The quips delivered by Mr. New Vegas include suggestions to listeners to keep "living the dream." The character, Newton says, "has a perverted sense of humor."

The designers created the role for Newton "because he is Las Vegas," Bergman says. "He really brings that extra touch of Vegas class to the game. ... And whether he's reading news stories about super mutants or introducing a Dean Martin song, his personality comes through."

"I have never been in a video game before and, frankly, have never played, simply because I have been working my whole life," Newton says.

Newton says he'd read the dialogue — one-liners in some cases, two or three lines in others — and "do them just a little bit different, each one, until we hit on what it was the guys wanted ... where it is Wayne Newton, but it's not Wayne Newton, you know?"

In the real world, Newton has been asked to participate in a Vegas citizens' catastrophe response committee with the U.S. departments of Defense and Homeland Security. "I accepted it readily, because in this day and time I think one has to take those possibilities in consideration and take it seriously," he says.

Should he ever be asked to record one message for posterity, Newton says it would be to "never give in and never give up. I think it is that message people need today."

I don't know about Fallout New Vegas.   There's something about it that's brining back memories of KOTOR 2, and it's not just the Obsidian connection either.  I hope I'm wrong about this.

What I've seen of it so far looks really good. They've taken the F3 formula and have tweaked and added to it in ways that seem to enhance the overall product, like more melee options, better follower control, and the reputation system. Now, that doesn't mean that it won't ultimately crumble towards the end, but I've seen nothing so far that would lead me to believe that there's anything fundamentally broken about New Vegas.

Looks less lively than I'm remembering Fallout 3 to have looked. If anything, I'm less excited for the game now.

Why the hell does every team member use the word "aesthetic" within the first two sentences of their shpiel? What's wrong with "motif" or  "feeling" or "look"? Either their art lead was drumming the word into their brains during team meetings, or they have a poor editor.

Trying to decide which of the pre-order packs look the best, but they all look equally lame. I might not even bother. Are any of you picking up the collector's edition? The extra stuff looks cool I guess, but I'd just as soon save that extra $20 for the inevitable DLC.

I've been looking forward to this more than any release (excluding SC2) all year. So ready. SO READY. I downloaded the (superior) PC version of Fallout 3 just to make sure it runs fine on my new PC and blah blah blah in preparation for New Vegas, and I ended up getting sucked right back into it and starting a new file. Slept through my alarm and was almost late for work this morning because I was up so late owning super mutants and raiders

i am

bethesda collector's editions are the only CEs i ever spend extra money on (although i had a $10 amazon credit for this one)

the stuff included is always neat "real-world" replicas of in-game artifacts/items, and this time you get a playable card game
