I don't like companions and my character is a greedy asshole so it made sense to let her get vaporised. I will admit that I wanted to get in there and steal all of their awesome weapons. But I'm also Guns and not Energy Weapons so it made no sense.

I like how maxing out a SPECIAL stat really effects the proficiency in the Skill tied to it. So since my Perception is at 10 I'm at nearly 100 Energy Weapons even though its at somewhere around 85-90 without the bump.

Quick Q. I've yet to start Fallout 3 properly. Is this loads better or would you recommend I play 3 first?

Its hard to say since I like both a lot but not a question to which is better, as far as fun, but I would play Fallout 3 first and then hit New Vegas. By then there will probably be some form of large patch that'll fix some annoying bugs in the game. But their experiences are almost distinctly different as far as layout of the world (3 feels more open, the physical layout of New Vegas kind of funnels you into places at first) and the clan/group system and Hardcore mode in New Vegas adds a bit of spice that could make back to back playing of 3 and New Vegas even more different. But as I said, I'd play Fallout 3 first.

I'd play Fallout 3 first because you'd never be able to go back to it after playing New Vegas

sometimes the npc comments work so well.  This one guy was telling me "don't try anything funny--I can spot a brotherhood spy from a mile away" and right as he says that Veronica, decked out in power armor, walks next to him with that goofy expression on her face.  Not the sharpest tool in the shed, that guy.

this game is awesome.  From how it's going, I think it might be longer than Fallout 3.  Fallout 3 was roughly 55 hours to do almost everything (all quests, special weapons, etc.).  Right now I'm past 40 hours, haven't even been to major areas on the map (like the strip), have several quests queued up, and only found a couple special weapons by chance.

and I'm lvl 22 or something and those stupid caz...flies destroy me and my crew.  If only they were willing to talk, my speech, science, and all those skills are almost maxed out  :'(

i love how they turn achievements off when you open the dev console to fuck around but all you gotta do is restart the game to get the achievements back on.

i'm at 20 hours and I've been in and around the Strip doing various quests. dunno how you guys are at like 40 hours and you havent even gotten to the strip (where there are a shit load of quests). now i haven't been to the lower right part of the map so maybe there's areas down there with loads of quests. i kinda made a bee line right to The Strip and did stuff that was along the road.

Linkzg, have you been to Freeside and did stuff for the Kings at all?

also: I got the Explorer perk and was kinda disappointed when i saw absolutely no locations to the far left on the map. seems to be nothing but desert but there's probably some hidden stuff i'm guessing

ALSO!! i found Jacobstown. it's awesome. best place i've found in the game.

Really? I had to use the console turn it on to get something to unspawn in The Thorn.

Had my first game breaking bug tonight. I think I got ED-E killed by some Deathclaws somewhere, or he got lost. Anyway I rocked up to Lucky 38 and Victor told me my partner couldn't come in, which is when I realised I lost him :(

Nope.  Haven't been to freeside, jacobstown, or a lot of places north yet.  I have a lot of the southern part down save for some harder areas with animals I can't fight yet.

The Caz flies are unbelievably easy to kill with the flamer. I'm level 24 and the only enemies that still give me problems are Deathclaws. I can take a single one but when they gang up on me I am screwed.

thats crazy. i think i'll start going down there next after i finished clearing out all the locations north. i really didn't think there would be a lot of quest heavy areas down there tbh

I've read that the most common way to lose a companion, but mostly ED-E, is to travel over terrain thats already hard for the player to navigate so the path finding ability of the AI of your companions can just get stuck.

yeah, if you try to get past an area by climbing mountains or taking a shortcut, your companions will take the regular long road path filled with enemies and get murdered.

I think I'm keeping Veronica with me since she's strong and I upgraded her armor through her quest.  My one encounter with a deathclaw that didn't end terribly was because she showed up and punched that blind asshole in the solar plexus.  She is great for closed in areas like a vault too.

ED-E just kinda dies a lot and needs more protection, but he's useful for carrying items.  I'll upgrade his lasers whenever I get to that area and see if he becomes less of a bother.

So what's the point of no return in the story?

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I've met Benny in his presidential suite and talked to Yes Man. I'm at Caesars fort and I've put the Platinum Chip into the terminal, now my choices seem to be helping either one and nothing else. Not sure where to go from here because I don't like Mr House or Caesar.

I have a save before I talked to Benny so I can always do it a different way, but I wanted to get to Caesars fort so I could help change the Khans mind about siding with NCR.

1. You'll be told when you're at the point of no-return.

2. If you begin to do too many missions for a certain faction, and are reaching the point of alienating them, you'll receive a quests that tells you you're getting close to that.

Drinking unopened Sarsaparilla bottles can also give you a star cap but I would rocket through 50 of them fast since I think the game just gives you regular bottle caps if you go to fast. Letting the prompt that you got a bottle cap go away before you open another one seems to work best.

Thats so fucking stupid considering how Hardin seemed more reasonable and progressive than the original Elder. Apparently the same shit happens with the Great Khans. The game makes you think a certain choice will lead down a brighter path but then pulls a switcharoo, this isn' grey characterizations its just straight up bullshit.

Watch out for the main Brotherhood quest.  There's an annoying bug that'll deny you from getting power armor training from them even after you've completed everything, so then your only other avenue to get the training is by completing all that bullshit with Arcade.  My suggestion - ignore Hardin about everything.  That guy will just fuck shit up.

There's so many fucking gamebreaking bugs in this that I'm surprised that I'm still plugging away at it, but I'm near the end so I might as well see this leaky ship limp into harbor.  Ugh. I really should've waited until everything got fixed before I started in.  Typical Obsidian game.

There's actually some power armor you can wear without training
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Its Remnant Power Armor. It has the highest DT and gives you +1 Strength but no Rad Resistance though. Its a bit North East of Cottonwood Cove, across the river. There's a large amount of Deathclaws there though. The armor should be on one of two dead guys (one wearing actual Brotherhood Armor). Its around the area where the Mother Deathclaw is.

You can wear that without getting trained? Huh. Everything I've read said otherwise.

Anyway I got that armor AFTER I went back to an old save and did the Brotherhood questline over again.  I was going to go through Arcade but the motherfucker kept disappearing so I just said fuck it and loaded an old save. I ended up losing like 7 hours and 5 levels worth of progress just to be able to wear power armor.  :/

And I still don't understand the decision not to let the players wear the NCR elite ranger armor unless you actually kill one of them but doing it screws everything up if you've sided with either of the two main factions.  You'll be shunned by the NCR so that questline in null and void and Legion will think you're NCR if you wear it around them so they go into instant attack mode.  The only way to do it is to become an independent.  Smells like some DLC BS.

God damnit.  I really should've gotten this on PC. :/

Finally finished.  I really like how they went back and followed up with a majority of the characters and places you interacted with, although when Cass's story came up I felt like an ass....again.  I shouldn't have let her get killed.  Felt bad about that one.

I wish the game didn't have the countless number of bugs and glitches that it has though, not to mention and all the ridiculous loading.  Whenever they get it all straightened out on the PC, Vegas will be amazing.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Obsidian. All those people know is how to make buggy ass shit.

I've had to go back multiple times in New Vegas because of glitches.  Hell, just the other day I lost basically an entire day's worth of time because of that damn power armor bug.  I realize that this is one massive game but I can't believe that they pushed this one out the door with so many obvious issues but then again that's Obsidian.

The way I finished that quest was to replace the human meat the White Glove people were going to eat with regular brahmin meat, after swiping the recipe from the chef in the basement and then locking him in the cupboard. Then I took the son back upstairs and waited for the one guy to give his speech about how they'd all eaten human flesh. Once his speech was finished, I came out with the son and exposed him. For that, I became a hero.

Beyond the Beef is the most buggy quest in the game because it's probably the most complex quest in the game in terms of all the branching and ways it can be finished.  I had to do a bunch of restarts because I kept getting glitches preventing me from solving it the way I wanted.  I think the quest was just a little too ambitious for Obsidian but you can use that phrase to describe everything they do and that's why I love them.  I tend to prefer an ambitious game that's a mess or unfinished to a polished game that is industry standard. At least NV has an ending :P

Plus unlike a few of their prior unfinished messes, NV will get DLC and they can use that to fix up any loose ends (cough*cough*the burned man*cough*cough) in the story.

Yep yep companions are still distinguished mentally-challenged fellows that never fail to agro everything within 500 goddamn miles. :piss Companions :piss2

As for bugs, it's pretty regular for me at this point (~20 hours in) to tab out and take a quick look at that Fallout wiki site every time I get anything that's not a simple fetch quest. Probably inconvenient for some, but I like to sneak a peek at the potential loot anyway, and I have years of practice with tabbing out of the game to look at quest guides thanks to WoW

And the sad thing is that patch doesn't even cover a quarter of the shit that needs to be fixed.

F this game for now. I'm going to have to start over I'm guessing.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I was looking for that dudes son in the utra lux and I came across the body of the investigator. I take the matchbook and leave the room and get attacked by white glove guys. Rex takes them out and now I'm vilified so I get attacked by everyone in the place now. I even ran in and grabbed the son, but I think I out ran him back to his dad. Told the dad he was there and now he's running around looking for him. After a while of them not getting together and the quest not being done all while dancing around 30 people trying to cane me, I gave up and quit out.

I don't have any ambition to continue right now. I hope to get some down the road.

My problem is that I was getting chased way before I even found the chef. I just tried to strong arm my way through.

also, i have this really shitty glitch where sometimes it looks like my dude will lift his arms over his head over and over and the only way to stop it is save/load, a lot of other people get the glitch as well, i don't see that on the list

It seems like the majority of players posting in this thread are PC players. I assume the 360 version is a buggy mess as well, but is it an unplayable buggy mess like the pc version seems to be?

the biggest issue seems to be with npc companions, and losing them (sometimes they are still counted as being with you when you try to recruit another npc)

there's no way to fix it on 360 other than loading an earlier save, you can get around it on pc by going into the console and moving the npc to wherever you are

the companions are dumb as bricks, but this game has me using them unlike in Fallout 3

Veronica is a beast with her shotgun glove.  First encounter with a Deathclaw (that didn't end poorly) was me running backwards popping some rounds into its head.  Then Veronica comes out of nowhere and does a right hook that must have shattered its skull.
