Gamasutra was at Bethesda's event in London to hear the game announced by marketing and PR VP Pete Hines, who provided few specifics on the game's engine, gameplay or perspective -- but did note the game's neither a Fallout sequel nor a spin-off.

"It's not Fallout Tactics -- it's not Brotherhood Of Steel," said Hines. "It has no impact on what [Fallout EP] Todd Howard and his guys are planning."

A number of Obsidian staff are veterans of Black Isle's original Fallout games. "We've really been enjoying working with [Obsidian] on it," Hines said.

"That is all we're going to say about it right now," he added.

fallout 3 wasn't game of the anything.
fun game, just wish the combat didn't suck shit. maybe a new game/studio can remedy that.

It's true, i don't know where the guy that wrote the Assassins Guild missions went, but bethesda's story writing and story telling is piss poor.

Compare it to Obsidian's pedigree, i don't even have to go far, KOTOR2 and Neverwinter Nights 2 were great "big event" efforts, and Mask of the Betrayer was just awesome, a true gem.

I like almost everything about it - art style, setting, hilarious dialogue, clever in-jokes, VATS, music

playing through again with a mega-evil character is awesome, you get a lot for your money

my only criticisms are some repetitive "dungeons" and it's easy to get turned around and lost in certain places because the way they do the local map is pretty worthless

the pitt is pretty good, but i didn't care much for operation anchorage other than snagging the gauss rifle and that badass armor at the end

Well to each his own, i think VATS is terrible, the art style is rough, probably hampered by some of the roughest 3D graphics of the generation, and the shit character models and Ps1 animation.

And the dialog is so boring, doesn't feel natural, and it always has this "quiet studio" delivery to it. But hey, i don't need to go on, it's not like Bethesda owes me shit. Well aside from time.

I wouldn't say VATS or just shooting is good, but it's so simple that it never becomes a problem or hindrance to what's great about the game. I mean, I can kill almost any enemy in the game in under 2 seconds and am free to just explore.

When you get into the mid-levels I think the game plays okay as a shooter, I rarely bother going into VATS when there's only a couple of enemies onscreen, snipng also works pretty well

the only times I played as a shooter was when using melee weapons or to kill radroaches. It's just too easy to hit the vats button, click on the head 3 times and watch the bad man's head fly off.

I'm somewhat surprised that Fallout 3 has a lot of hate. Only somewhat surprised because a lot of those hating on it, at least on gaf, are people who aren't happy that it isn't the exact same game they played years ago. Every argument about the game is "what? fallout 3 doesn't *something* from fallout 1? not interested" ignoring that Fallout 3 does tons of great things that Fallout 1/2 didn't.

I played it for about 30 hours on the PC and never finished it, but loved every second. Now I've started a new character on the 360 version and am feeling the repetition. I should've just gone straight for the end game on the PC, 'cause it kinda bugs me that I spent so much time with the game without finishing it.

picking off raiders across the wasteland, then tapping the vats button and seeing 0% everywhere

the best part of the game is going over to those communication arrays and initiating the mini-nukes. then seeing them go off in the distance. ... well.. i was expecting a bigger boom but i was fine with that.

I'm totally down for some more single-player Fallout, by the way. I can't wait to see what comes of this and the inevitable Fallout 4. Also, somebody [Obsidian/Bethesda/Bioware] needs to snag the Shadowrun franchise and revitalize it.

Fallout 3 = AWESOME

New Fallout game by Obsidian = fucking awesome news. Seriously, how can this be bad? KOTOR II was good until the ending where it became apparent that Lucasarts was like LOL LETS RELEASE THE GAME UNFINISHED WITH A TACKED ON ENDING. Haven't played Neverwinter Nights 2, but getting the game soon from my roommate. I don't see this game being a shitfest.

If there was one game last year that could have eclipsed MGS4 for me, it was Fallout 3. Great game. God, I can't wait for Elder Scrolls V.

I just don't get how people get up in arms about the writing in games. It's like arguing about various colors of poop. If you want decent writing, read a book.

All of the games which have been praised for impressive writing, or mature themes, or complexity -- they are all half-assed in comparison to even a mediocre book in an analogous genre.
