Anti-depressants: Good idea?
« on: April 20, 2009, 05:19:12 PM »
I've been having some extreme bouts of depression lately, specifically this passed weekend. It's getting pretty damn annoying. I have always tried to tell myself not to complain about things, especially since there are people that are WAY worse off then me, but it seems I can't help it.  :-\

Anyone ever taken these? If so, are they helpful?

have you had things to be depressed about?  is it interfering in a major way (missed work, etc.)?  most of the time it's better to wait it out.
but it's really hard to say when the most I know about you is that you probably like Oblivion.

I have taken them before...they won't make you stop complaining about stuff. if you're mad about your situation in some way, you should figure out why that might be first.

They affect everyone differently.  Some people say they make you complete emotional zombies that don't care about anything.  Some people say that they are lifesavers.  Some people say they have no effect whatsoever.

For the time that I took them, they didn't really change anything that I could tell.  The best thing I would be able to say would be to see a doctor about it, have them recommend someone to talk to first.  Have a few sessions, then decide with them if anti-depressants would be a good idea.  But don't let anyone tell you "OH MY GOD DONT DO IT YOULL NEVER LOVE AGAIN YOUR LIFE WILL BE OVER" because it doesn't always work that way, and as a matter of fact, in the majority of people that I've known on anti-depressants, few have ever done that, even if they think that's what's going on.  Kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I took them when I was a teenager for very good medical reasons reason. Back then they weren't nearly as kind to the body as they are now-seriously, the side effects were horrendous-but it was well worth it to get through that portion of my life.

I'd do it again if I had to. Honestly, if you're at the point where you think you might benefit from them, chances are that you really will benefit from them.

I would recommend weed over antidepressants any day. Every time I have taken them I have gotten the blunt end of the side effects, such as drastic mood swings and massive apathy about everything.

Anti-Depressants are useless. Use St. Johns Wort.

http://www.all-natural.com/hyp-1.html

I use St. John's Worth and DMAE as mood elevators.  The thing with SJW is that it makes a lot of other medicines you take weaker, most notably, birth control pills.

How would someone exactly know for sure that he's depressed, and not just looking for something to blame for personal failures?

I need to know how self diagnose myself.

Well, for me it was not doing anything in high school, and when my english teacher asked me why I didn't turn in the paper that would pass or fail me, I said I didn't care about it.  Apparently then she decided that it was up to her to call my parents and tell them I was depressed and to send me to a shrink and get me on meds.

Other than that, if you feel really down all the time, you might wanna check into it.

have you had things to be depressed about?  is it interfering in a major way (missed work, etc.)?

I'm not gonna lie, one of the major causes is pretty distinguished mentally-challenged, and probably something no sane person should give two shits about. And that issue is my own mortality, and coming to terms with the possibility that there may not be an afterlife.

A slightly more reasonable gripe is that I've been away from my family for so long (haven't seen them since 04), as well as many of my friends having moved to different parts of the country, etc. I just feel really isolated.

I took them when I was a teenager for very good medical reasons reason. Back then they weren't nearly as kind to the body as they are now-seriously, the side effects were horrendous-but it was well worth it to get through that portion of my life.

Yeah, this shit has been affecting my personal life too. I didn't think it would get to this point, but here we are.

Oblivion, aside from the afterlife issue it seems you could do something about how you feel by simply visiting some friends/family if thats possible.

On the afterlife though, everybody struggles with that sometimes I guess. It's not stupid at all, after all it is one of the fundemental questions to ask oneself. Why are we here? Is there a reason for all this? I'm completely not coherent on this issue myself, 90% of the time I see myself and everything as just cosmic dust, but when Im on a plane, or scared for having HIV or something, I pray to God.

Cambodia, just for the perspective you know

It's pretty funny that we only pray to God when we are in deep deep shit but make him disappear out of our lives outside of those moments.

I've been agnostic for like 6 years. I think what's making this very difficult to accept is that, although I stopped believing in my previous religion, I still believed in a 'God', or some form of higher power. I never thought about the concept of nothingness (or oblivion, if you will lolol) until just recently, and that's just kinda shitty.

Seriously you Europeans and your rationalising, low expectation standards no wonder you fail at everything.

I feel like Kosma, moving to a new city with little control has sort of been invigorating. But you have to be in the correct mind state.

To simplify your problem greatly isn't the problem with your own mortalility because you believe your not living your life to it's greatest potential, with no lasting legacy etc?

A friend posed that possibility before, but I don't think that's the case. No matter what awesome thing I 'may' accomplish in life will be essentially meaningless if, after I die, I would have absolutely no way of knowing, if that kinda makes sense.

So it's not the actual dying part (though that's kinda worriesome too).

Maybe lasting legacy is overstating it. Perhaps simply being the best you can be is more simpler and immediate.

Okay. So the good news is that I feel quite a bit better since the last few days. Not a 100% better, but I think probably as close as I'm ever going to get, since I don't think I'll ever be forgetting this ordeal.  Still better than moping around all day, I s'pose.

Thanks for the help, everyone. :)
