I don't get why MS won't just throw Mushihime, DDJ, etc. on the U.S. XBLA?  Spend a few hundred megs, cash in on a couple thousand easy sales at $15 a piece, get some residual word of mouth sales, call it a day.  That's all MS, that's all.

Not enough of a market.  Most shooters that aren't legendary like Ikaruga get average sales on XBLA.  Most of Triggerheart's sales were from Japan anyway.

The hardcore shooting fans in Japan (including myself) have no problem paying full price for a full release.  Also, disc releases allow the game to come with extra content like extra modes and different versions of the game.

I also don't see Cave letting their newer titles be sold for around $10-20, they have a lot of pride in their work.  Even so, 5pb tried to release their licensed shooters on LIVE before, but this was during some weird time when MS was trying to cut down on straight arcade ports for some reason.  Not sure if they're still worried about that.

If you really want to play shooters, you gotta pony up for a J-360, but you'll definitely be set this gen.

Shooting market isn't healthy enough in the States for retail releases.  The few games that come out don't sell very well at retail.  Hell, it took forever for RFA to get a publisher, and it's a no-name publisher that's selling the game at a super-discount price.  Cave would never let that happen, and they apparently charge very high royalties if someone wants to publish their games in the west (as Atlus did for Donpachi).  If a foreign publisher wants to pay it, I'm sure Cave would be very happy giving them the rights.  Otherwise, it's not worth the effort for such a small market.  It would be another Wartech incident.

You're probably correct.  Maybe if Cave lowered their royalties, Atlus came up with some serious swag, and the shmup community viral'd the hell out of Atlus fans, they could move 10k or more.  They sell out of copies in Japan, so it's not like these games need to be 100,000+ sellers to be worthwhile...

I really think the shmups that have come out have all been marketed incorrectly.  Mobile Light Force, Raiden, Castle Shikigami, Wartech...these games came out with no swag, no ads, and "westernized" box art/titles that seemed to be of the philosophy that they would sell more copies by disguising the games' origins rather than playing up the whole super japanese anime art thing.  Wartech's cover art makes it look like mech warrior...then you pop the game in and it's all kawaiii desu-ne~~^__^;;;   Mobile Light Force is definitely not Charlie's Angels and Castle Shikigami (aka Mobile Light Force) has voice acting done by homeless people they took off the street.

cloth maps and pendants: the key to success.  also the title of my next book.

Eh, I think you overestimate the people that buy limited editions with all that extra crap for the sake of it.  At least with Atlus games, the core game itself is appealing to enough people and the extra swag might be enough to push them over the edge.

Unfortunately, shooters are a lost art in the west.  Whenever a new one comes out, if it has unlimited continues then people just credit feed and bomb spam the game, beat it in an hour, and complain how the game sucked, was easy, and a waste of money (despite most games usually having extra content if you beat it with restrictions, although 90% of players probably never see it).  Limit continues and you get people complaining about how the game is impossible.  This is especially true of some Cave games in which a casual player wouldn't even beat the first level without continuing.  It only appeals to a narrow market, one who enjoys the challenge and has the dedication to not continue but opt to make it farther the next time.  Sadly, most western games do not have this mindset.

At least RFA gives you three games and there are some restrictions on the last level so you can't credit-feed through the whole thing.  The Raiden name is also somewhat well-known in the west, I think.  Combine that with the $20 price tag and there's really no excuse for people not to pick it up, but I certainly wouldn't expect strong sales.  Future 360 shooters would be one game, which alone will cause plenty of bitching from reviewers saying that it should have been on XBLA.  Hell though, buy RFA and tell all your friends to buy it, really push for it.  If it sells well, you guys might get Raiden 4, and if that sells well, then the publishers know that there's a market for shooters in the west.

Oddly enough, I think Otomedius would have the best chance in the west, it's a game that's very easy to get into and you can scale the difficulty to a level that you find challenging but not overwhelming.  There's probably no chance that it'll ever get released due to the game's content, however.

Omega Five was definitely atypical...it was a dual-stick shooter (which seem to be popular this gen) that was very easy compared to most games (but challenging enough so that the casual gamer can enjoy it).  It also had really nice graphics and production values, which I'm sure helped.

The best comparison to a Cave game would be Triggerheart, a largely unknown top-down shooter with average graphics and a fairly challenging difficulty level (although Triggerheart is much easier than most Cave games).  The game was more or less dismissed by review sites and the general public didn't care about it, which is a shame since it's a pretty good game with some really interesting ideas.
