It's a bullet hell shooter. Your damage hitbox is like a pixel wide.

That's the thing, you don't die much in Cave shmups because you have the smallest hitbox in the universe.  It's awesome because it's like playing with godmode :D  You feel badass surviving a million bullets and sometimes you don't even realize how you did it!

and then you get to the second stage where the difficulty goes bonkers.

I love these games and I want them here, but I do play them pussy style (continues)

Everyone posts this video about Mushihimesama Futari, but it's obvious no one understands it.

Yes, the hitbox is very small.  In addition, a good 95% of those shots have no chance of hitting you.  They just spread across the whole screen to freak people out and look intense, but it won't phase hardcore players.  You just need to focus on the hitbox and your immediate area instead of the whole screen, it's something I call the "shooter's eye" and once you get the hang of it, it's very easy to see lines and which areas are dangerous.

In addition, that battle is the game's true last boss, which requires you to beat the entire game without continuing on the hardest difficulty, plus beat it a second time with increased difficulty in order to reach the boss.  If you're good enough to actually reach that fight, you're probably good enough to stand a chance of winning.  It's no different from insane bosses in RPGs or whatever.  Think about Ninja Gaiden 2's final battle on the hardest difficulty level, it's probably really difficult, but if you reach it then you know what you're doing.

There's also much more to this game than the true last boss fight, overall it's a very solid shooter.

tbh it looked boring to me, the player dodged almost everything by keeping to the bottom of the screen as the bullets fan out.  I like it when you're encouraged to move forward to dodge at times.

originalz covered it -- i don't know why message board people are always posting second-loop endboss videos as positive or negative representations of the genre when the overwhelming majority of players are never going to see anything like that anyway

the special effects guy at the movie theater:  "Oh that really wasn't that cool, they just used some CG and camera angles that play with your perception to make the explosions look like they're happening to a real city.  So, um, stop enjoying it."

I've never even heard of "second loop" endbosses before - how long has that genre staple been around

Yeah, the second loop is standard in most games now...not sure what game started it but it's definitely been commonplace in the past 10 years, probably longer.

Some games automatically go to the second loop after completing the game, or give you the option to quit or keep going.  Most of Cave's stuff require you to beat the game without continuing (although some of their games also have additional requirements), and then beat that to reach the true last boss (in some games you also have to clear the second loop without continuing for this).  Needless to say, very few people can make it this far, although many hardcore players consider the second loop as the true beginning of the game.

Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu even has two versions of the second loop, with the "true" second loop only available if you get all of the hidden items, no deaths, and no using bombs.  Haha, shit's brutal.
