when Ed Banger and that whole french thing took off, a lot of people began to pay more attention to him again, but he got a little too experimental for my tastes for the most part

Finally getting to Season 2 of Twin Peaks and the Roadhouse scene, where the killer strikes again, the song that play is absolutely amazing (especially accompanied with the somber vibe that everyones feeling, awesome scene). Here's the song...

I finally listened to the original version of Extraordinary Machine. On first listen, a few of the tracks definitely sound better than the album versions, but some don't; overall I definitely prefer the orchestration here as compared to piano n bass sound of the album version. I really like the stripped down version of Oh well, which feels more emotional and powerful. The strings on Not About Love are an improvement, but the lack of drums sounds odd. On the other hand, the album versions of Better Version of Me, Oh Sailor, and Waltz are superior imo.

I'd like to get the vocals on the album version of Tymps put on the leaked version of Used to Love Him; apparently many people don't like the synthesizers/hip hoppy sounding album version, I like it though...but I'll take the instrumentation on the leaked version over it.

Overall I like both versions and I'll have to listen to the original tracks longer to make any final judgements. Also, I didn't know Questlove played drums on the album.

Review Round Up

What I’ve been into the past week or so:

Puerto Rico Flowers- 4.  This is the sound of a million Goth dance floors at 5 AM after it has wound down and only the faithful and jobless are still out and about.  Joy Division dirges at Mozart’s Requiem speeds.  The vocal inflection is a really good affectation of the whole Deathrock vocal style before it melted back into horrific trance music and pretended it was EBM.  The four songs read like a typical night out, Not My Idea to Let’s Make Friends to Torture to This is Murder.  There is talk of a dark music revival in “hip” culture, and will probably find an audience of people who are interested in that.  $8 from Fan Death Records.

Airfix Kits – Flextime.  This was described to me as Minutemen meets Gang of Four, and I can see where that comes from.  This EP is three excellent “post punk” songs that move along at a really fast clip.  Flextime is an ode to a shitty job that let’s you come and go at your leisure and about how almost anything in your day is worth it for that freedom.  I’ve never worked flextime but yeah it sounds pretty heavenly.  There’s a strong pop element with clap percussion and background “la la la” that will have you happily bopping along at your current, non-flextime job.   Rounding out the B-Side are 80s Aesthetic, which I took to be kind of ironic given their sound.  The final track is 21 Hot Knives, a song built for screaming at the top of your lungs at concerts spilling beer over your hands as you dance around manically gripping a pint and smiling manically.    I got my copy from Sorry State Records but it’s available directly from the band for $5.  I’ve ordered the other EP they have and looking forward to it.

Best Fwends – K R U S H E R.  This is a tour EP that they’ve generously made available online as a pay what you will for 320 KBPS.  I’ve been following this band since 2006 and I can honestly say that this is their best, most diverse release yet.  17 songs ranging from Breakcore IDM / Metalmashups of “Unholy”, to the Casio Metal Jams of “Eradicator” (which has atonal keyboards envelopes standing in for the typical lead guitar noodling), there are tracks with other bands such as Japanther, Twin Power (the pretty amazing Summer Pop of “One Dead Body”), also included are skits, a song about cannibal romance (”Hungry For Love”), and a dance remix of a dance remix (the unkillable M.Y.S.E.L.F.).  I hate to say this has something for everybody, but I think in the right environment, you could get away with just playing this collection at a party.  http://bestfwends.bandcamp.com/

KOOL A.D. – Zoot Fantastic. Half of Das Racist has teamed up with Lil Ben and released another short project.  I don’t want to say this is “experimental rap” but it doesn’t really fall into any easy categorization in content or flow.  It’s certainly more challenging than Das Racist’s typical output with the drone static beat behind “THAT IS HOT DUDE” or the nearly ten minute long “TIME WARNER” which features what I think is just a reading of Time Warner’s cable channel offerings played over a sample I can’t quite place.  “FRUCTOSE, SODIUM” structured pretty conventionally while the raps are even more outre’.  It’s certainly worth a listen.  http://www.zshare.net/download/711428203685cc9a/

Man, the "Italians Do It Better" label is fucking great. They've got The Chromatics, Glass Candy and now Desire...

Each one of them are unique sounding but with a disco influence. Song progressions are usually affective and the vocalists (which in this case is also the vocalist from The Chromatics) work very well with the sound.

Also, from following a recommendation on iTunes (on the Desire - II page)...

while i still haven't got my copy yet, i can vouch for this. been listening to his one song on fan death records myspace for months now. funny how two hardcore/noise vocalists, wesley eisold being the other, are now creating music that's part of some bauhaus, joy division revival... and to add to that, with  lyrics not dealing with cum and murder.

Where is Brandnew to help me pimp the Los Campesinos! album??
You guys should really give it a listen.  It's a lot less fruity/indie than their first two albums so it might appeal more of EB.  I'm terrible at describing music so I'll just say it is good stuff.

this is also an attempt to get LA Bores into the band so they'll go to the May 8th show at the El Ray with me!  Last time I saw them I tried to get all my friends to go and no one went so it was just me and my gf at the time.  I feel bad everyone missed such an A++++ show.  Want more people I know to go this time around!

as familiar with a band you can get after seeing them open up for various acts in 2007/8, notably aids wolf, a place to bury strangers, health and silver apples. i can't even recall much. i'll give their new ep a spin and hopefully they'll surprise me since god knows we need all the good bands we can get.

On a 90s east coast binge (again)

Hadn't listened to it in awhile. While I prefer OB4CL, this is probably the apex of pure rapping for most of the Wu members. It's as if they felt Nas up-staged them on Verbal Intercourse and decided to try their hand at more focused internal rhyming to great results.

First time hearing this. It's not as good as The Infamous on either a lyrical or production level, but there are plenty of great songs here. While it does have a dark setting, it just doesn't feel as sinister as The Infamous; nothing comes close to say Right Back At You, which is still one of the grimiest beats I've ever heard.

i've never heard of them but they have a really extensive discography

i am kinda sorta going through the Maximum Rock N Roll Best of the Decade lists

it's amazing how much shit they give Fucked Up.  "they used to be awesome but now...." sort of irks me as does the hatred of Sex Vid's "new" fans.

Any sort of cross over is wildly despised but at least they're not using the "sold out" canard anymore.

The last couple of hours, I have been listening to:

(Image removed from quote.)

So is this a return to greatness, like they were circa Blue Lines & Protection, or more of the same bullshit they've been spewing forth since 100th Window?

Listening to Southside Stranglers’s debut EP Too Much TV I feel like someone kicked their way into my house, took over my record player, drank a quart of whiskey, kicked in my bathroom sink and fired handguns affectionately at my neighbors before passing out in a puddle of Lucky Charms and milk.

In roughly eight and a half minutes, the Richmond Virginia based band manages to dispel the reputation of Richmond’s scene being preoccupied with making and remaking 80’s hardcore. There are elements of punk, in the speed and shortness of songs (the longest are barely longer than a minute and a half), elements of garage rock with affected howl of vocalist Kenny (of Government Warning) that wavers between glam rock yowls, vigorous screams and actual singing, and elements of what is called “good old rock n roll” which always seems to mean not quite Grand Funk Railroad but not Minor Threat either.

This release kind of sits on the pivot point of bands like NoBunny or other acts associated with Jay Reatard versus the very “real punk” sounds of something like early Black Flag. There’s not as much romance as in something like Reigning Sound or even Richmond’s Cloak /Dagger, but there is just as much heart and soul here.

I must have listened to this thing 20 times and Saturday, at a party, I was cornering people and forcing them to listen to the mp3s that haven’t left my rotation.

Words don't do this justice. Too fucking good.

Half passed-out in my friend's bedroom high as fuck listening to this was like flying through space.
